Quake 3 tips please

Post by Kyzou »

I bought quake 3 a while back, when my brother showed me it a few years back. I never really payed attention and never really noticed how gripping this game is. I was bored last week, after a long day at work and decided to install it. I came to this site, and downloaded all i needed to make it work online, i also downloaded Pro mod as i had seen previous videos of this mod, rocket jumping etc.

Im now online, and cant stop playing in every spare minute i have,
Can anyone give me any tips on playing? any advice as it would be appreicated.

First, Welcome! :icon25:

Mhhh, I can give you some simple, general tips:
(Depends what gametype you play)

-Sound is extremely important (!!), use your ears as well as your eyes.

-Knowing the maps inside out and were all the placed items are is a BIG pro! (or should I say, a must)
You can walk thru them offline to learn them if you please.

-Adjust your FOV (field of view). 110/115 is nice.
You can see what's going on around you much better ect.
/cg_fov 110

-I'm all for a low sensitivity, but find a sensitivty that works for you

-Don't overuse silly binds, it's annoying :p

-Don't scroll thru weapons, bind each one to a key!
Q3 is all about using the right weapon at the right time so
you must be able to swap quickly.
(Well, not all about, but you get the point I recon)

-Be a good sport, be nice, have fun, relax, enjoy, laugh.
Eat, drink and sleep once in awhile :icon30:

Happy Fraggin!

Shoot 40% lightning gun and 70% railgun. I use this tactic whenever I can.

That, and play, play, play.

It takes a lot of practice, but it's very satisfying when it does happen. :)

Still cant rail very well, rocket jumping is getting better but i still fly up in the air, trying to smooth it out..
railings annoying me tho, leading the targets made it easier, but i guess practice makes perfect

Avoid playing me if you want to live. ;)

Learn the maps until you can walk backwards through them, and think about the space around you. The smaller the map becomes in your mind, the faster you can create a tactic.

strategic weapon choice will help a lot.

if an enemy is in the air use a hitscan weapon like rail, lightning, or even mg (can do serious damage if you can aim) unless they're right in front of you and you can blast them with shotgun (over 100 damage for a full hit and faster reload than rail)

if they're right in your face, don't use RL... you'll hurt yourself. go for shotgun or plasma. if you are using rockets AIM LOW and be prepared for the blast to launch them... once they're in the air they can't dodge and you can place next shot right on them for big damage.

always have armor. if you see armor, pick it up. when you pick up an armor (especially red!!!!!), be there again in 25 seconds to pick it up again when it respawns. (cg_drawtimer 1) biggest newbie mistake is ignoring armors to try to get RL. you're better off with ssg and 100 armor than with RL or RG and naked because if you miss once, you're toast. especially in FFA.

of course you have to know the maps and be able to move through them as quickly as possible. i'm still convinced that fatal1ty's biggest advantage in each new game is his speed. he simply beats the opponent in all the races to items and can thus chose his battles and control items.

Thanks. I just wish someone would have expressed that to me when I started playing. Unfortunately it took me until now to realise how important it is. :icon30:

Try to think tactically. Attempt to build a deeper appreciation for the tactical nuances of Quake, or any FPS for that matter. Here are some general tips:
  • - Watch and learn from your opponent
    - Avoid predictability
    - Maintain situational awareness
    - Anticipate your opponent's moves
    - Take a smart approach to doors and natural choke points
    - Camp tactically
    - Listen to the audio cues
    - Strafe around corners
    - Backtrack occasionally
And here are some finer points to consider:

Deception
Don't make a habit of picking everything up. It gives away where you are and where you've been.

Just as audio cues can give you away, you can use audio cues to deceive your opponent:
  • - Open doors but don't enter.
    - Launch a rocket down a corridor you have no intention of entering.
    - If there are 4 armor shards, pick up 2 of them (if there is another place with 2-3 shards).
    - Hop into the water then quickly get back out.
    - In a few maps, you can step onto then off of an elevator to activate it.
Tactical Camping
Every now and then, it makes good tactical sense to stop, take a break, and assess your current situation. Find a place that offers a good field of fire and protects at least your back and one side. Stop and listen. When you're running around and shooting up the world, it's hard to hear what else is going on around you. Listen and take note of what sounds everyone is making, what audio cues the map is giving you, etc. Sometimes--in certain situations it may be more advantageous to strategically camp in order to maintain a favorable position.

In regards to aiming, I think it really boils down to practice and experience--which translates into playing a shitload. Eventually, you want to reach a point where you no longer have biases toward particular weapon(s), rather you let the circumstances dictate your weapon selection/usage.

With practice and these tips in mind, your multiplaying skills will increase over time until you're seeing your name in lights at the top of the scoreboard.

Good Luck and Happy Fragging! :)

It was mentioned already but I want to touch the subject again since it is very important.

Item control/timing. It is VERY important that you time and control the key items such as the armor megahealth quad and even some weapons depending on the map and opponents. Not only are you boosting your health(in the case of Mega health) but you are also denying the other player(s) of it which gives you an edge. And by timing items you can sometimes even predict where your enemy will at or is heading which you can use to get a tactical advantage over them.

Pull down the console and type in "/cg_drawtimer 1". And from now on start taking steps to pay attention to it anytime you or someone else picks up an item.

Quad (and other powerups) - 2 minutes
Weapons - 30 seconds
Armour - 25 seconds
Health - 35 seconds

note: That the above can change depending on the map or
gametype your playing.

For awhile its hard to do because you must time multiple items as well as everything else that must be done in the game such as trying to figure out your opponent(s) and stay alive. But if you keep at it you will find that it gradually gets easier.

An easy way, or at least the way I do it is to start is rounding the numbers to the nearest 5second mark and then instead of always thinking about "twenty five seconds plus current time" just mentally group the numbers together to the point where its like reading a book.

So try to memorize the fallowing.
(item taken) (armor respond+25) (mega health respond +35)

:00 = :25 :35
:05 = :30 :40
:10 = :35 :45
:15 = :40 :50
:20 = :40 :55
:25 = :45 :00
:30 = :50 :05
:35 = :55 :10
:40 = :00 :15
:45 = :05 :20
:50 = :10 :25
:55 = :15 :30

So then, you hear someone pick up the megahealth at 3:42 you group it to the nearest 5 second which is :40 then with the above numbers memorized your mind will instantly read :15, from then you can put the specific number back in and you'll know l that the mega health will respond at 4:17
BTW I'm making it sound a lot more confusing than it is. lol

Also another thing is to study the player re-spawn locations as well as know how the re-spawn system works. Easiest way to show how it works is on the space map q3dm17. If you kill someone on one side of the map they will(in most cases) spawn on the other side. so if they die near the lower 50health on one side of the map it is a good possibility that they will respawn near the machinegun ammo or upper 50health spawn points on the other side.
You can rack up a few good spawn kills by doing this or simply have the advantage of knowing roughly where your enemy is and will be headed do to where they spawned.

Also note that many of these general tactics carry over to other deathmatch type first person shooters as well(granted that may not meen anything to anyone since they seem to becoming a dying bread thanks to the onslaught of world war 2 rehashes..).

as an addendum; people tend to be very predictable, e.g. after someone made the jump between the two highest platforms on DM17, 80% of them will run for the shotgun + ammo in the corner. make use of these predictable patterns and preemptively shoot a rocket that way.
and on the flipside, try not to be predictable. sometimes turn left if your instinct says right. helps :icon14:

another one:

if you caught an opponent on a corner, there you go... frag him...

don't put yourself cornered because an opponent can lock you into a corner and kill you instantly...
