Avrdm1a - Get up, Stand up

Post by poub_ »

After 20 betas, the final :)

You can have a look at the map here: http://www.corinthian.de/files/avrdm1a.pdf (3.1MB, high quality pictures and purty eye candy inside)
But you should download the pdf anyway since it contains a pretty useful layout overview to "get" the map quicker.

The actual map can be downloaded here: http://www.corinthian.de/files/avrdm1a.pk3 (3.3MB)

Some quick facts: It's meant for CPMA 4v4 Team Deathmatch, it's pretty big, looks good and has been playtested *thoroughly* in cpm tdm.

I dont hear as many voices yelling for good new tdm maps as for duel maps but I think it'll be cool anyway :)
Btw I happily invite server admins to put (the final version of) this map on their servers, thanks for the help!

No good release post without a huuuge thanks to a few people: whole clan noobs anonymous <3, all the betatesters from #promode: dezje, apheleon, mindbullets, nekon, element, mantra, eizid, voodoochopstiks, putty, freux, syl, offo, rokky, ix, lugia, defender, sl1m, luke.

hf with the map :)

Edit:

Sry for the huge pics first...

Uu... my nemesis, chopsticks, is in the pdf... now I hate it even more.

Map looks good though. But I don't play CPMA, so I can't really try it :/

ok no offense but seriously what the fuck is up with people releasing screens inside a pdf these days

if you can host a pdf you can host the contained images just as well...

Especially since the pdf is about the same filesize as the map itself...

Could it have been Obsidian or Kat?
I don't know why people start loving PDFs just suddenly, I know they are serious, serious trouble I say, espec since my FF kinda hangs in 400min when I open one inside of it.

You people are complete fucking whiners, wait the extra 10 seconds to load the pdf. The presentation within the pdf document was quite nice.

Looks pretty interesting, although a bit lockable. Do you have any demos I can watch?

:dork: Wrong on both counts, dude. I think pretty much every experienced mapper knows what would drive other people crazy, like bloated downloads full of extra fluff.

BTW, PDF Download Extension

Thx xfoo, there are no demos yet to watch unfortunately, maybe play some pickup on it ;)

I'll explain the usage of the pdf - as if it wasnt obvious when you downloaded and THEN opened it (one of the reasons I added the filesize behind the link *ahem*).

It was simply to deliver screenshots in high quality, a decent overview of items and a very useful (for people wanting to play the map online against other people) layout overview, all in one neat package. I'm all for minimalism but a readme in the zip is a little too shabby for a project I and other people put so much effort in. That is all.

Funny enough, from all the places I posted the map and the pdf, this forum here is the ONLY place where people complained about the pdf, seriously, what's up with that?

To everybody else I hope you enjoy the map (and the pdf).

Trivia: The first pdf I ever saw about a q3 map was in lloydmorris' castle map, classy one.

I don't need the extra PDF, but that's just my opinion. I certainly don't mind if you put up a post with an optional PDF download. My choice to click or not, right? Best of both worlds, a readme.txt included with the zip for the minimalists and an optional PDF file for the fans who need it all.

I do like your map though, I will try to run around it a bit with some bots if I get the chance tonight.

because this is probably the only forum that has enough BALLS to tell you that it's a shitty way for the presentation of something you're trying to "sell" us.

i'm sure you did put alot of work into it and that's great and appreciated, but the presentation needs to be simple and easy for your audience. (and it's not because of acrobat being a bitch, i have foxit)

and even though lloyd's a proven great mapper and he used a .pdf for a presentation doesn't mean it's the way to go. it's not.

time you spend authoring a pdf would be much better spent authoring a quick html layout with plain-old "luddite" jpeg screenshots you can hotlink to from your "new map released" post

and everybody lived happily ever after, the end

"a quick html layout with plain-old "luddite" jpeg screenshots"

low expecations. good if that works for you. it doesnt for me, hope it never will.

"simple and easy for your audience"

it is. pdf is easy and simple, everybody has acrobat reader, it's clean, compatible and consistent with the way i want to present it. this is not so with any editable txt file or some html garbage.

"doesn't mean it's the way to go. it's not."

you all still fail to bring any serious argument to the case. I laid *my* reasons and *the* reasons for the pdf out, all you guys do is say "we dont like it, it's not good, nobody wants it, it sucks".

The irony is that the download stats of the pdf are pretty high, so people actually do like it or else they wouldnt use it. And again I got complimented anywhere I showed the pdf on the net or to other people offline. So I watch all the negative comments with amusement as my hits on the pdf go way up and people continue giving positive feedback.

You know, the only reason I could think of that makes the pdf invalid is the smaller bandwidth posted pictures would need. But it still sucks because I want my stuff to be experienced a certain way and different layouts of forums and different forum code make me zzzzzzzz

To everybody else again: enjoy \o/

Well the number of downloads don't technically corrispond to people actually *liking* it when there isn't an alternative. If people want to see what the fuss is about they either have to grab the map or the PDF, needless to say the PDF is easier.

Plus of course had *no one* made a fuss over this it wouldn't have got any hits at all, it's called reverse psychology, tell someone not to do something and you're sure as hell gonna find them doing it.

I posted the map on the promode forum and on esr as well. The majority of hits came from esr. There was no debate there.

And your first point is exactly why the pdf is so effective. Most people dont know pdfs for maps yet, so they download, maybe a little weirded out, but then they get a pretty nice presentation and think "woah this [map] looks cool" and download the map.
