Cloning HDD's

Post by AmIdYfReAk »

hello gents!

in a little wile, i will be looking to clone an old IDE drive to a New SATA Drive ( Same size, make, etc )

and i am wondering if i can clone that HDD and etc From HDD -> HDD wile they are both hooked up to the computer INCLUDING the MBR.

i know i can do this with Norton Ghost if i put a Third HDD to save the Image file to and apply it to the SATA Drive that i want to replace the old IDE drive with, MAke the image, then apply it to the sata.

but it takes ~2 hours to make the image, and ~1 hour to apply it and there has to be a more Direct way to do this :)

Anyone have any idea's?

p.s. Dont say "You will run into problems changing the Boot Drive from IDE to SATA" i got that covered ;)

Thanks in advance!

Then don't be lazy and make the image, lol. It's the best way IMO.

Make the image with ghost, as an image file. store on the drive that you cloned.

Run ghost on second drive.

It works just fine.

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.

I am now sick.

As per the instructions, you cannot Save the image to the Drive that is being Cloned..

its cool if it cant be done as i said, i know i can do it i was just wondering if there was a faster way :) ( i.e. directly copying )

You can't direct copy installed programs. Ghost should work fine.

save the image to the empty drive.

Then copy said image to main HD.

Sorry, should have been more specific

i know ghost will work fine, and you mis understood me. i am talking about an app that would make a 1:1 copy of the harddrive driectly to the new drive.. i head of a few linux app's that can do this on a LIVE Cd... not a Copy and paste ffs..

That is what i said in my first post... GG soap.

Anyway, this is basically a waste of time. i guess i will do the Three drive mombo as i said before.

Later, and thinks for the input.

doesn't maxblast 3.xxx work across sata / ide lines? I'm not sure but if you're going baracuda or sommat, maybe seagate has a similar utility.

AHHH HA! MAxblast does have that feature!

And i wouldent worry about the SATA/IDE thing.. i can set the Mobo to make the SATA Line Emulate an IDE drive.

i will see how that works out! thanks man!
