High ping on cable modem!

Post by Mondoman9630 »

I have been getting some lag in CTF when there are more then 6 or 8 people playing on the same server. I spike up to about 250 to 300. Is there something i can do that might help my lag?
Hard to play when the person I am shooting at past me about 2 seconds before... HAHA

Thanks.

If you're on cable, what are your upload and download speeds? If you have a very low upload speed then you will need to reduce your connection settings on busy servers.

dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-09-05 19:51:54 EST:
2817 / 235
Your download speed : 2817 kbps or 352.2 KB/sec.
That is 7.7% worse than an average user on charter.com

Your upload speed : 235 kbps or 29.4 KB/sec.
That is 31% worse than an average user on charter.com

You have 3Mb download and 256k upload. The upload is pretty weak.

Try these settings in-game:
\rate 10000
\snaps 40
\cl_maxpackets 30

You mainly want to be controlling cl_maxpackets as that's the update frequency from you to the server. Rate might have some effect, and also \com_maxfps and \cl_packetdup

What does \com_maxfps and \cl_packetdup do?

com_maxfps is the frame rate cap for the game. Common values are 333, 125, 76 and 55 with 125 being the most common. Initially is was intended that the com_maxfps value had no impact on network traffic, but there is still an increase in network upstream with high com_maxfps values. On 56k things were better for me with 55FPS, but you should find 125FPS is ok.

cl_packetdup is the number of times a particular packet of data is transferred to the server from the client. This helps on lossy connections, but increases network traffic. It can be set to 0 often without a problem.

i have a 1MB down and 128K upload and i'm perfect with these settings

/rate 25000
/snaps 40
/cl_maxpackets 125

on a full 20 ppl server i ping 31

and i dont play locally, i do Chicago / Texas both ping under 34

sounds like an outage or your isp is having routing issues.

foo, no need to set net settings so low with that connection.

Yer I came back to this today and what I put seems far too low. I didn't have a problem with maxpackets 125 on a 256k connection last year.

try right clicking your q3config.cfg and disabling readonly. Do this in both baseq3 and in ctf folders.

also, you didn't answer my question - does this problem occur consistently on all servers?

I would have to say yes. If you can recommend a Server to test it on i can confirm this to you but i usually play on the same servers becuase i get less problems joining.

the reason i ask is that some servers have a low rate cap, and this causes some people to lag when the action gets heavy. Some people don't experience this lag, however, and it seems to be a punkbuster issue.

Try joining any server, and make sure it has a high rate cap (or no rate cap)

Set your rate to 25000 and join it, and see if you experience lag.

You can usually tell what the rate cap is by looking in the bottom right corner of ASE, and noting the value for sv_maxrate.

0 means there is no server side cap, so if you see one with 0, try joining.

I only get 500 down and 130 up.
Once my satellite contract is up, maybe I'll switch back to cable.

I played on another server today and WOW did i get really laggy. I am getting great ping with the settings with my normal server but on one other it was nasty. Could this just be a bad connection on the servers end or should i play with my settings depending on the server? I have them set to;

/rate 25000
/snaps 40
/cl_maxpackets 125

These settings work great with my normal server.

stick to servers which you have a good connection to. That's what most people do.
