Rather than abandoning news altogether, indefinitely, try taking breaks from news reports from time to time and favour certain more impartial online news sites to more sensationalist TV news reporting (with it's anxiety inducing, attention grabbing music).

Also, avoid reactionary blogs that seek to rally an ideological base while simultaneously getting a rise out of those who might disagree with inflammatory language. Even the most disgreeable of positions can be presented in a way so as to not induce such reactions.

Summary of news channels in Australia:

SMALL KITTEN GETS SAVED BY BRAVE ELDERY GENTLEMAN
ELDERY GENTLEMAN IS REALLY A PEDOPHILE

Followed by current affairs shows:

On that hand, I read online news papers both local and foreign and tend to tune into World News on SBS.

Great topic! I too find myself questioning if I should participate with the news and current world events. I have also found that my life is more relaxing and enjoyable when I stay away from the news. At the same time, I can' t help but wonder how much of my non-interacting will effect the future. What happens in the world does directly effect me. Can I do anything to change what's happening globaly, or even locally? I feel as if I can't. There is my struggle within.

I love my country and what it stands for. What has happened to it lately has me seriously concerned. I know our government lies to us, and manipulates us to get us to allow their master plans. It's hard to swallow, but at the same time, they are doing what they need to do to keep our way of life. I believe that is why so many Americans choose to stay ignorant to the truth. Most Americans couldn't accept the truth, and allow it to continue.

Watching the news is harder for me now. I am constantly questioning everything I see. Is it the truth, or American propoganda? I think that has become my biggest problem watching the news. I know I could be subject to lies and propoganda. Some or all of the evil being reported, could be nothing more than lies.

So you denounce the very idea of a free press?

Interesting.
