How often does shit like this go down in the U.S.A? Every couple of weeks it seems.

I just can't figure out why such bad shit is normal every day life in America. It can't be as simple as putting it down to having a bigger bunch of dickheads per capita than the rest of the world.ctrlnuke wrote:If we just got rid of the entire mid-west and south. West and East coast are normal enough, I swear.

You'd be surprised, there are an AWFUL lot of dickheads here.Law wrote:I just can't figure out why such bad shit is normal every day life in America. I challenge anyone to read that story and still think that there's a god.
Why does God always get dragged into these things?Nightshade wrote:I challenge anyone to read that story and still think that there's a god.
For arguments sake alone, if you accept the fact that there is a God, why do you think you'd be able to understand what happens in the world, let alone why? If you understood everything, there would be no reason to need, or even mention the word, "faith."
No, I'm not going to get into a whole God discussion; however, in answer to your challenge, yes--I believe in God, I believe there are still good people on this planet; and yes--I also believe there are sick, twisted, psychotic people here too.

The US is not any worse than any place else on the planet and a hell of alot better than many. There's good and there's bad....everywhere. Get use to it.Law wrote:How often does shit like this go down in the U.S.A? Every couple of weeks it seems.

that i simply do not accept. Canada, Australia, the UK - these are countries taht have similarities to USA, yet that type of killing is rare, very rare outside USA. Sure Iraq is worse, so is North Korea probably - but looking at established democracies - USA has problems, significant problems.Wabbit wrote: The US is not any worse than any place else on the planet and a hell of alot better than many. Wasn't there a shooting at a college in Canada two weeks ago? Police killed the guy?
People are fasinated with bad news and gossip. They'll sit and stare at a bad accident for 10 minutes, bad news fills the papers...cause it's what sells. Good stuff is "boring" and hardly ever newsworthy unless papers are short copy. Given that fact, plus the number of news agencies in the US and people can hardly fart here without getting their 15 minutes of fame.
If every country had the same number of people and level of news reporting, I believe things would be much the same.
If you want to believe people in other countries are somehow morally superior or any less barbaric go right ahead, but you're only fooling yourself.

yes there was a shooting in canada - not 3, and that one was rare for them - thats the whole point, if you want to say things are okay in usa cos there are worse places in teh world, then by all means go for it. Just be aware that other established western and european democracies dont have the same level of school related killings
edit - im not talking about moral superiority, nor lack of civilisation, dont throw up straw arguements; and as for having more news focus on life in America = do you really think that school killings would not make international news if it happened in France, or UK, or Aust???
2nd edit - as for population density - what was the population of that Armish town? I dont know but expect it was not a factor in this event. another strawman arguement

If there actually was a kind, loving, omnipotent, loving god, there's no fucking way some psycho would be allowed to line up little girls, tie them up and shoot the at point blank range.Wabbit wrote:Why does God always get dragged into these things?Nightshade wrote:I challenge anyone to read that story and still think that there's a god.

I know you'll disagree and I have no problem with that, but you'll never convince me that there's a god. There's no reason for shit like this to happen, no larger lesson to be learned, and no reason for a benevolent deity to allow it.
You said you didn't accept the premise the US wasn't any better or worse than anyplace else. You were not focused solely on school killings, so neither was I. By the way, are you saying there are alot of school killings in Iraq and North Korea that I'm unaware of?
The Amish killing was a nut that decided to kill school children. It happens. http://www.mosnews.com/mn-files/school.shtml, two years old, but it still shows that school sieges happen.
Also, I believe over the past few years, there have been 3 incidents in Canada of school shootings. Seems to be an up-and-coming fad.

I was talking about the population of the entire US. Not one Amish town. As an example, it would not be accurate to compare the behavior of a Nation of 500 million people with the behavior of people in a Nation of 10 million. The proportions are different. That's the point I was making, which it appears you missed entirely.S@M wrote:2nd edit - as for population density - what was the population of that Armish town? Honestly? I stopped trying to understand it. There was a point, don't remember when it was, that I knew I would never--not ever--understand why truely horrible, inhumane and unjust things happen on this planet--to people, to animals, to the environment. Incomprensible fear, pain, and needless suffering...Nightshade wrote:If there actually was a kind, loving, omnipotent, loving god, there's no fucking way some psycho would be allowed to line up little girls, tie them up and shoot the at point blank range.

At that point, I figured that God must not think like I do. That there must be something else involved that I have no knowledge of.... I no longer accept most religion based premises, i.e., God is a benevolent, just and kind-hearted old dude in the clouds. Nor do I think God is standing there waiting for people to make mistakes so he can smite them. There has to be something else.
My own personal conclusion is that things that I find "meaning" in don't mean the samething to God. Since we're operating with a different level of knowledge, I'm coming to different conclusions than God is. It's the only thing that makes any sense to me.

Apart from the fact that occurrences like this happen on a regular basis in America yet next to never happen in any other country.Wabbit wrote:The US is not any worse than any place else on the planet and a hell of alot better than many. And I am used, much like the rest of the world. That doesn't mean I'm not going to question it.
Your patriotism is blinding you. If you think the amount of shit that goes on in the US is no worse than any other country then you're just ignorant.Wabbit wrote:Wasn't there a shooting at a college in Canada two weeks ago? Police killed the guy?

It was Gods will! God works in mysterious ways! etc...Nightshade wrote:If there actually was a kind, loving, omnipotent, loving god, there's no fucking way some psycho would be allowed to line up little girls, tie them up and shoot the at point blank range.Wabbit wrote:Why does God always get dragged into these things?Nightshade wrote:I challenge anyone to read that story and still think that there's a god.
