UPS and Shutdown

Post by Sevensins »

My power went out today while I was at work and, since that was the first time since I bought my UPS, I was wondering if there is a way I can check to see if my computer was shutdown properly. I checked event viewer but it didn't have any events for shutdown/power or even any events around the approximate time the power went out.

The UPS came with software, but I am using the power options for windows. Does it work fine or is the third party software usually better?

What I did to test my UPS was unplug it from the wall. Not very creative, but it worked.

How long was the power out? and are you sure that the computer was even shut down? the Ups usually keeps the thing ON untill the batt starts to get low THEN Forces a shutdown.

The built-in windows UPS options are more than adequate IMO. Just set it up so that when the UPS hits critically low power it will shut down your computer. If there aren't any improper shutdown messages logged, then chances are that the UPS service did it's job. If you want to test it then do what KoS suggested and unplug the UPS from the wall and see what happens.

I have to set my "critical" limit relatively high, my 19" CRT drains my battery like a 12 oz can of Coke. It will however shut down. I primarily use it to save any work and shut down or to coast through the 3-5 second power outages that happen here sometimes.
