that was pretty amazing - you have to wonder if the hippo was a female, had lost a baby or something, its like the documentary I saw once that had a female cheeta that adopted a baby deer and protected it from other predators - no one really knew why, but the cat lost a lot of weight as it would not leave the deer to hunt. Eventually the baby deer died as it needed milk, but it was really remarkable to watch the footage.

or like the video when a pig mom was nursing dog pups cause the dog mom passed away...

aye i tihnk i saw the same thing, on NGC. it was about nature's desire to have a family vs the desire to mate.

monkeys stealing puppies? Pigs nursing dogs? Interesting...

I've seen it in other animals, but i dont think its a desire to have a family. Some mother animals will take a young animal, disregarding its species, if its own young died or something

Yeah that is very interesting....I did see the documentary about the lion and the deer. She cared for that deer for a really long time. The thing about the hippo is cool because hippos are supposed to be very violent/deadly creatures. I think it may be the need for family, but I think it just may be "motherly instinct", the feeling of wanting to care for something.
