i remember seeing those pics before, or similar ones, and the same thought popped into my head:

they don't look very real. The curves and lighting are too perfect.

What kind of technique was used to produce these images?

They've done a lot of post-production work, enhancing the colors and such. I believe it's common with telescopic astronomy photos.

They talk about the process they used here:

Yes, colors are always enhanced in those amazing deep space shots.

People who think that they will see any colors when they point their own telescopes at things like the Orion nebula are in for a bit of a disappointment when they see a gray hazy cloud.
