A friend with a HP media center pc did a reinstall with the xp pro media center disk, not the hp recovery partition because he deleted the recovery partition. In device manager, it shows only the a pci device is uninstalled. Cannot get this to install.
Sound is onboard and it seems that there is no sound. Would a onboard sound device show as a pci device? I would have thouight it would show up under the sounds, video, and game controller part.

You should be able to get the sound driver off hp's site.
If Windows doesn't know what it is, it may get tossed in as a PCI device or under unrecognized devices. I believe some onboard deviced are routed through the PCI controller, which is why they show up as a PCI device.
Did your friend make recovery discs prior to formatting, BTW?

Have you tried the Realtek driver update? It could very possibly be the full installation.
