Has anyone bought a Zune?

Post by saturn »

What are your experiences with the player and the software?

Most reviews are low on enthusiasm. This one is incredibly negative (but also very funny).

Chicago Sun-Times: Avoid the loony Zune
Yes, Microsoft's new Zune digital music player is just plain dreadful. I've spent a week setting this thing up and using it, and the overall experience is about as pleasant as having an airbag deploy in your face.
"Avoid," is my general message. The Zune is a square wheel, a product that's so absurd and so obviously immune to success that it evokes something akin to a sense of pity.

The author is also lashing the music industry
"These devices are just repositories for stolen music, and they all know it," said Doug Morris, CEO of Universal Music Group. "So it's time to get paid for it."

Well, Morris is just a big, clueless idiot, of course. Do you honestly want morons like him to have power over your music player?

this seems as gooder thread to ask in as any:

I'm currently after an mp3 player, I need to to be 20gb or above, I'd rather it didnt have video capability and I'm not fussed if it's not a colour screen (in fact i'd rather it wasn't) I do however want it to support mp3, flac and ogg. I also need to it be fairly robust. I'm going to be using it in a workshop so it's going to want to be able to take a knock here and there.

If possible I'd like it to have just a drag and drop functionality without fucking on with a crap program, or at least be able to download a third party plugin so I could intergrate into foobar rather than a shitty stand alone program like itunes or that sony pos.

Recommendations? I've never had an mp3 player before and don't really know where to begin

what is 'syncing' as it pertains to plugging an mp3/media player device into your computer?

It means it syncs the mp3 player with your music program and updates it accordingly - ie you download and add a new song to your WMP playlist and when your mp3 player is within wifi range, it automatically adds that song to its own playlist without you having to actually do it yourself.

...i think

with itunes you choose which audio folders/podcasts you want on your player. when you listen to a podcasts on your player it will be marked as played. itunes updates podcats daily/hourly and will auto delete the played files from ipod and copy the new ones over.

syncing is more or less between the itunes program and your ipod.

Gonna bag one of those, I think ... I like that it organises stuff using a directory structure rather than by artist/album too as that's how I have things set out on my computer.

Cheers <3

Havent used a zune yet. but this line destroys this guys credibility
The iPod owns 85 percent of the market because it deserves to. Apple consistently makes decisions that benefit the company, the users and the media publishers -- and they continue to innovatively expand the device's capabilities without sacrificing its simplicity.
The simple fact that the most retarded feature EVER on a mp3 player, STILL exists on the newest ipod models, is beyond insane.

Oh gee, i sure wish i could pull that MP3 back off my ipod, OH man i had to format, sure wish id of backed up everything. Zoh! Blank ipod.

Im sticking to creative.. Fuck it.

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.

I back none of them.

But at least with creative (think samsung as well) you dont HAVE to use software to add music.

Creative is awesome. iPods are okay, but they're far from the best thing out there.

Anyway, I played a little with the zune and the gui is fabulous. The actual player is huge, though. I don't think I'd go for that.
