need help with port triggering

Post by [xeno]Julios »

Ok, am in oman right now and trying to configure this router to open some ports for various applications. Problem is, the router doesn't have port forwarding, but rather port triggering.

This is similar to port forwarding, but it has a weird twist whereby a specified outgoing port will trigger an incoming port to be opened.

The problem is, I know which incoming ports I want opened, but don't know which outgoing ports are triggered by the application in question (e.g. soulseek).

I tried using a range of 1-9999 for the outbound trigger, but that didn't seem to help.

I also found a software called port trigger (from portforward.com), but you need to buy it to get it to work (this software allows u to manually trigger the port by configuring it in conjunction with router).

DMZ works, but don't wanna risk it. Any ideas?

Just make sure you've got the XP firewall turned on (and if you're not on XP, frankly LOL... just get one of the free ones) and you'll be fine to use the DMZ.

And if you really can't figure a way around port triggering, try setting the triggering port to port 80.

thx for the advice - yea am on xp - if 80 doesn't work i'll use dmz. Is 80 commonly triggered by all applications or something?

port 80 is for http - for example: all browsers use this, so by default, it is open on any consumer grade router.
