Have you ever saved anyone's life?

Post by tnf »

If so, do you ever think about how different several people's lives would have been had you not just happened to have been in place X at time Y?

For some reason this just popped into my head because my cousin's son is graduating high school this year and I saved him from drowning several years ago.

I've saved a few more as a lifeguard. And one friend who may have gotten beaten to death in a parking lot.

I'm sure someone here has a cool story of pushing someone out of the way of a car or something. Did the weight of what you actually did hit you right away?

Does almost killing someone count? :olo:

I used to work at a furniture warehouse and I was pulling out a huge metal rack with 2 steel frame leather reclining sofas in it with a forklift about 45 feet in the air. For some reason, after I lifted it up, I drove backwards way too fast and stopped very abruptly and the rack just flew right off my forks and came crashing down about two or three feet in front of a friend of mine who was watching me work. Totally destroyed the sofas and the rack... the guy just looked at me and said "yea.. I'm leaving now"

The thing probably weighed almost 600 pounds. If that hit him he would have been a fucking pancake :icon28:

I lived close by to my high school, and one summer night a few of us were chilling out and playing basketball (like homiez do), when we heard a pretty loud scream coming from the front of the school.

No one bar my friend and me had the balls to go and see what happened, and as we got to the front we see a man in his late twenties or thirties standing above this naked woman, on the road, his car parked to the side. We chased the cunt off and went back to the woman, turns out he was about to rape her. The coppers came and took our stories etc, his car was stolen. And I am not sure if they bothered to chase it up, but the memory and feeling of helping someone in a desperate and dire situation will stick with me for the rest of my life.

On a positive note, I've saved a fair few lives in terms of guidance on healthy lifestyles, exercise and fitness.

I don't know if it counts, but my friend saved me from drowning in a lake in Finland years ago. I swallowed a couple gallons of water, I just remember losing all rational thought as I kept getting farther from the light reflecting on top of the water, I was at the point where I couldn't even understand what was going on. I just felt a hand grab me and pull me out.

That's fucked up... if I was there I would have either chased that guy down and killed him or told my friend to do it. Fucking rapists.. I have zero tolerance for that shit

Do you have the guy's address? I'd like to go to his house and slap him.

Awesome, then you or your friend could spend the next 15 odd years in jail.

I guess we weren't thinking, but our first thought was to see if the woman was alright or hurt.

Cool, then the rapist owns you by ruining your life. I'm sure that'd be ok with him too.

Simmer down bud. I wouldn't actually kill him. It's just that I consider rape to be the worst crime possible so it makes me really agitated even just thinking about it.

Yeah, but you know how the "justice" system works. You'd only be condeming yourself for manslaughter, no matter what the conditions. Fucked up still.

Ok well to get it back on topic:

A few years back my friend and I came across two young punks jumping on the head of a sleeping homeless guy. We chased after them and pinned them down for fucking ages until the cops and ambulance came. I don't know if we saved his life, certainly saved him from a horrendous beating anyway.

Good shit... they must've been rather annoyed at being held down for so long, yes?

You guys must live in fucked up neighbourhoods.. I go out walking with friends all the time at all hours of the night and we never see fucking anybody. Our city just turns into a ghost town after 1am or something :paranoid:

Haven't exactely safed someone lifed tho, but some drunken old fart was laying in the middele of the road just in a downhill corner . I just spotted him on time to hit the breaks or I would have ran over him.

When I stepped out the car he was having convultions so I guess he was having a seizure of some sort, so I called the emergencys. I didn't check the guy, because I didn't know what to do but some of the other people who pulled over a few minutes later, turned out to be doctors and checked him out.

Fuckers thought I hit him with my car....

Probably more than a few from cardiac rehab; not counting people on telemetry who crashed

Same, though it's probably a stretch to say I saved a life (i.e., swimmers cramping up, and one nutty 10 yr old who went apeshit when he thought he saw Jaws at the bottom of a public pool).

When I worked as a therapist I probably prevented a few of my clients from killing themselves--these attempts were usually precipitated by their receipt of my bill, so it's probably a wash--and I did some crisis response work that presumably stopped some dude from killing some other dude.

I've never really thought about the long term consequences of any of it, and didn't really experience any emotional highs as a result of my work...nah, it was mostly lows, which is precisely why I GTFO of the therapy game.

Ive saved a few, but it never bothered me as much as some of the ones I lost. A few people cant stop thanking you when they make it through a successful resus, its just embarrassing - cos you didnt do it for them personally as such (makes sense?).

Family or "circumstance" dont really come in to it for me, if I can predict and prevent then its all good, if not, but resus is successful then its all good.

I lost a single 34 yr old woman one night while doing cpr, that was ugly, I took months to get over that.

Not as pissed as I was. Someone rang the closest police station and the cops told them to ring the station in a different suburb, as they didn't deal with situations in the area we were in.

I convinced a friend to call a suicide hotline. She eventually went into therapy and got much better. Not sure if that counts.

Yeah probably. When I was much younger, I pulled back my friend when he was about to run across the road into incoming traffic. No way he would have made it.

As for if it would have made a difference.... well we're no longer friends after a full scale riot at a house party, and he is in iraq now operating tanks afaik. So probably not.

talked down a few suicidal people and called ambulances/cleared airways for others - and pulled a couple of people out of things like the path of cars and fatal falls. the one that sticks in my head wasn't really saving anybody but it's sort of related.

a group of us had just come by a large amount of cash and a good friend had spent most of his his share on a samurai sword. i doubt it was a real, proper samurai sword but it was incredibly sharp and looked the business. that night everyone was pissed up/high and my mate was messing about with the sword again. i wasn't interested in it, but it was swinging far too close to people, so i pretended i was and took it off of him and sat away in the corner looking at the hilt with the blade out in front of me.

a minute of swordless ninja moves later, he tripped over the snes in the middle of the room and landed on top of me. there was a moment where i could see him looking at the tip of the sword as he rushed toward it, another friend's jaw starting to drop and my own wrist frozen and failing to twist the blade away from him. i yanked my shoulder and elbow and the blade slapped against my lap, instead of plowing through my friends belly.

i lost my temper and shouted at him like an old maid at a child. we all lived there and no-one had their own room as such, so to cool down i went round my mates house and watched red dwarf videos for the rest of the night. when i got back in the morning there was a hand-drawn sign on the living room wall that said "WE HAVE A GARDEN. NO KUNG FU OR SWORDPLAY IN THE HOUSE!"
