Does a pc controller work with q3?

Does a controller for the pc work with q3. It works but q3 doesn't know what it is. When i enable joystick,i leave the game and come back,then upon re-entry i noticed it said on the blue console no joystick no valid joysticks found (6). I wonder how u can get this to work,if you know plz tell me.
