Ghost
Ghost
Similar to my last post in a way, I think.
I have an older Windows 98 computer that I have programs on that I dont want to lose. I am going to scrap this machine and just use my Windows XP home computer.
I want to ghost my image from the '98 machine onto a partition on the Windows XP computer. This computer does need a reinstall anyway.
Should I ghost the image from the old hard drive from '98 computer onto a partition on the windows xp hard drive while xp is still installed.....or should I format first, creating 2 partitions and ghost the image onto a partition and then install xp.
Never done this before.

If you ghost it then I believe it will create a single file, somewhat like a zip file. That would mean that it would have to be installed as a bootable partition on the hard drive. Considering you are prolly moving to a completely different machine I doubt it would work well. Go with the other suggestions of just backing up. Use a crossover cable, thumb drive, whatever. Or you could take the hard drive out of the 98 machine, stick it into the XP machine, keeping the XP hard drive in there, make sure it boots to XP and then copy the files from the 98 hard drive to the XP hard drive. The only problem with just copying files is that any programs requiring registry entries will not work and any start menu entires will be lost.

Not trying to argue, but what is the point of the ghost program. Isn't for doing things like this?
And if it ghosted the image on one partition and I installed XP on another partition....I wouild have a dual boot sitution right?
And I wouldnt have to worry about old programs not working on XP because I could boot into windows 98 and use them there.

If you want to do something like that, you'd be better off just saving the files and stuff that you want to keep. Do a clean install of 98, then XP and then transfer the files you wanted to keep onto the 98 partition. If you ghosted the entire drive you would be transferring all the drivers and settings for the old hardware. Considering all the things you would have to change, it would be much easier to just do clean installs.

Ghost is primarily used for data recovery from viruses, hard drive failure etc etc. It is meant to be able to bring a machine from non-working to working rather quickly as compared to other back-up methods. This does prove a problem for Ghost as it backs up everything, so it can't be put on another computer with different chipsets. I guess that is the downside to speedy data and system recovery.

but then again as of last year 98 is unsupported and, in turn, not secure, so you have that.corpse wrote:OK I understand a bit more. I'm understanding that 98, unlike xp does not care about hardware changes.
Meaning where xp will [may] blue screen if a different motherboard is installed for example, 98 doesnt care.
But the other stuff about the ghost makes sense now. Thank you
