Router Recommendations

Post by Deathshroud »

My Linksys router is a tired PoS and constantly freezes up and I lose my connection to the internet. Any recommendations on a good stable 4 port wired router? I have no need for wireless.

I've never had problems with D-Link / Netgear / Linksys.

Is it for cable or DSL? With DSL you'll probably want an onboard modem whereas with cable you usually don't.

I actually have a Belkins router that I got for cheap. After 18 months it's still working without a hitch :icon14:

I tend to avoid D-Link as best I can, as their products in the past have been hit or miss :icon14:

I recommend getting a good one.

Some people might recommend one that can use Openfirmware and stuff like that, people are running torrent clients on those

those aren't WRT54Gxx's. those are "range expanders" i believe you're referring to.

The dlink that I got free last year on black friday works good as a wireless access point connected to my netgear router. :P

lol, i have an old one that i'm doing the same thing with. funny enough, that thing would constantly reboot on its own no matter what firmware or settings i tried. it's been acting quite nicely connected to my WRT54GL with DDWRT firmware.

Juggs, links to some good open firmware for the WRT54's?

EDIT: Or a better question may be, are there any routers without the wireless feature that can be loaded with open firmware?

as far as i know only the wireless WRT's are supported. besides, they're not that much more and if you're not using it, you just disable the radio. i use DD-WRT but have also used HyperWRT. the differences are a myriad of different features and GUI representation. a couple of others are listed here under "third party firmware projects"

if you go this route, make sure NOT to get one with VxWorks firmware, which typically have less RAM and flash memory. get the WRT54GL and you're golden. for some reading and forum discussion on each of these firmware projects, you can head to linksysinfo.org and poke around.

if you like the Stock firmware but want just a little more without going overboard, i also recommend HyperWRT +tofu :)

What's wrong with yours? My router has been up and running for months without any problems.

Thanks to advice here I have been using HyperWRT for over a year with no problems. Not that I had any before, just wanted more wireless range. Great combo!
