Latest School Shootings!!?

why isn't there more news coverage of the school shooting? Its 3 people shy of the columbine shootings and that was committed by 2 kids.. So, in scale this one would be worse on a shooting per person statistically.. Is it because their Indian? Did they play Doom, too!!!!?

Is it because they aren't white suburban kids??

My guess would be because of the media. There is no controversy with school shootings (not to mention that they're getting slightly commonplace), so people aren't tuned into it because it's not the hip new debate.

That said, all the facts aren't in yet, so there's not as much to cover. It's all over the news here, of course, but then again I AM listening to Minnesota Public Radio.

no dude...its becuz it indians on a reservation...period...

difference between germany killing jews and the us killing indians is the us has never really taken responsiblity or paid restitution to the ppl it slaughtered...and ppl in the us still don't give a shit about indians...not even the media...

Also, I know reporter access has been limited, possibly since it was on a reservation. And I would not be at all surprised if that fact that they are poor Indians has anything to do with it.

But you imply that there isn't media coverage because the US hates Indians and doesn't give a shit about them. I'd say it's more because they have a culture and lifestyle apart from the rest of the states. What happens on reservations is the business of reservations, so I'd believe that a school shooting out in Pine Ridge reservation would not be highly covered in MN news. In the same way, other states could probably care fuck-all about what happens on a reservation in MN. People want to know details when it's something that can happen to them, as well. I wouldn't expect a school killing in Asia to be such a fuss here either, because the culture is different. Reservations are like their own little countries.

However, it's all over the news here because we ARE involved with what happens in Red Lake -- they contribute to our economy, etc.

no matter how you put it or whatever reasons you give, i think Geoff is ultimately right...the US/american people dont give a shit about them (if you want to say its becasue of lifestyle differences thats fine). also you might want to throw in the fact that they're not white.

I know he didn't say it. He implied it. Or, at least, I got the impression that's what he meant when he said it. Either way, he confirmed it.
I still disagree, though. Yes, the US is less interested in Indian affairs, but not (completely) because they're red-skinned, god-hatin injuns. It just happens to be something that doesn't concern us. If we hate them, why do they have so many privileges that could be easily taken away?

And when I say media access is limited, I mean the media is not even allowed on the reservation. They're all camped out in Bemidji, waiting for something to report. Hell, we're still not sure of the identities of some people killed.

Have you taken a look at WHERE the shooting was? It was in a remote location. Shit, it took something like 3 hours after the story broke to get a still photo of the school.

But nice try with the 'must be ignored because its native americans and not white people' theory. Too bad it was the first item on all the major cable news shows tonight.

Yea, its just bias. Nobody cares. It's not being talked about. Not in the news, nowhere, because it was at a Native American school.
