Processor Choices

Post by Kills On Site »

What are the best offering for processors these days. I have heard tons of praises for the Core 2 Duo, but what about AMD. I am looking for something in the semi-budget to budget range. Must handle Vista Home Premium well. This rig, if it goes through, would be for a friend and her family. I doubt there would be much gaming, but I think something dual-core would be beneficial. Any suggestions for what processors are worthwhile these days?

The Pent D's are nice and cheap, and OC well..

the core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz is also popular for the same reason.

Amd really dosent have anything that stands out atm ( for me atleast )

Word is that they are working on a new Proc that is going to be something to look out for.

Well since this is for a friend I don't want to risk anything with OCing. It needs to be perfectly stable. How do the Athlon X2s compare, price and performance wise.

Which would you guys choose Core 2 Duo 2.13 GHz E6400 at $222 or Pentium D 945 3.4 GHz Presler with no "Virtualization Technology Support" at $167 or Pentium D 940 3.2 GHz Presler with "Virtualization Technology Support" at $183.
That VTS is the only difference I could find between the two, other then clock speeds. From what I read on Wikipedia it seems like it would be quite useless to the average user.

the Core 2 Duo would be my choice, according to a few people that i spoke to, a "slower" core 2 Duo has no issues raping a P4..

again, this is what i've heard, i have not used a core 2 Duo PC yet, but it is infact my next upgrade. :)

I was thinking this Intel BOXDP965LTCK LGA 775 Intel P965 mobo. Any other mobos with good reliablity and chipset, preferably for less money.

That mobo only supports up to DDR2 677, whereas the Intel supports DDR2 800. What exactly are the real world performance differences between the two speeds of RAM?

go with the intel if you dont plan on doing any O/c/sli/etc..

But also, check out asus's line rather then Intel's.

Well I do not know which speed of RAM is best for the money. From what Google showed the DDR2 800 only gives about 3% boost in real world situations. Going with DDR2 667 would cost quite a lot less, I want to start this machine out with 2 GB of RAM since Vista will be the OS. I would go with DDR2 800 but it is quite more expensive then DDR2 667. What would you guys do?

i would spend the little more ( usually within ~$20 ) to get DDR800 man,

it is recommended to run 800 with a Core 2 computer..

but if it does mean that much to you, then get 667, it will work no problem, just slower.
