well so which is it? Do people get time off for pets and humans, or time off for neither pets and humans?

I think that people should get time off whenever the fuck they feel that they need it and shouldn't have to tell fat old bald cunts why they're out in the first place. I just call work and tell them that I'm not going to be in, since I have a grown up job that assumes I can take my days off responsibly instead of treating me like some sort of skieving asshole.

1. whether or not you take a day off over a dead pet depends on the strength of feeling toward said pet

2. whether or not your boss is OK with that depends on whether or not he's an asshole

3. gramps is an asshole, regardless of context

I'm not surprised to hear you say this.

It's a pet. I was devastated when I lost my Rottie, cried like a little bitch and I'm not ashamed to admit it. However, I would not have missed work over it.

Good man...

I have to reiterate a few things, since it's obvious some people aren't reading my posts.

1. I wouldn’t fire someone who took a day off for their dead pet.

2. I never said that I'd base my entire opinion of someone on this one incident. Though it would make me question their reliability.

3. Anyone who directly compares an animal to a human is an idiot.

4. I don’t care if you’re a brain surgeon or a bellhop. You’ve got a job to do and people are relying on you to be there.

I’m well aware of the fact that people develop emotional bonds with their pets. But I just don’t think that bond should be so emotionally draining that it prevents you from going to work. You have an obligation to other humans to fulfill. So I’d suggest that if you found yourself curled up in a ball, in the corner of your room, balling your eyes out over your dead pet, unable to function on a professional level, you shouldn’t tell your boss exactly why you’re not coming in to work. Because even though your boss may never say anything to you about missing that day, he may be questioning your reliability.

Sure - but would you think anyone who did was unreliable?

Do you think people shouldn't be able to take a day off?

one other thing to consider, what is the work environment like?

I took time off when my dog died, cos at the time i was working in a junior high school, where i was expected to be a happy cunt with a smiley face..i didnt feel like being mr friendly that day.

when i worked in a computer company with my friends, i wouldnt have taken a day off, i would have said that i was highly pissed off, gone out at lunch time, had a joint and sat there getting on with my work.

some jobs are not emotionally demanding, some require you to be in a happy mood.

I think this topic is about making sweeping generalizations about people more than anything else.

YGP, I'm only guessing here, but if you had told your wife that it depends on the circumstances and the person, it probably wouldn't have been an argument, right?

It wasn't an arguement, it was a conversation. Though it wasn't a very detailed one, she might have been a bit more understanding of my point if I had been able to express what you mentioned above.

Dedicated employees keep their jobs. I'm pretty sure there's something to be said for that.

BTW, what retail store do you work in?

I'd really have to look at it on a case-by-case basis. If it was a rock-solid employee, I wouldn't bat an eye. If it was a shitbird that missed days for flaky reasons, etc., then there would most definitely be some discussion about it.
Yes, you should be able to take a day off when you want, provided it doesn't create any huge conflicts at work.
