I don't think it's odd that people can have strong feelings for a pet. Especially if they've had it for a long time.

I'm with horton, I've had my Rottie being the only glue that held my world together at times. He was there when no one else was, and he asked nothing but to be fed, watered, and played with. Unconditional love and loyalty are powerful things. Hence the reason for the waterworks on the day I had to put him down. But again, you grieve, suck it up and get back to what needs to be done. At the end of the day, the bills still have to be paid, the lawn still needs to be mowed, trash taken out, etc.

edit: goddamn I miss that dog.

why exactly? It may not be human but it is a living thing. There is a certain amount of communication and understanding that goes on over the course of any relationship with a pet.

Personally I would only take off for immediate family dying. Extended family only for the funeral. Definately not for a pet.
