Location + Time of Day
Location + Time of Day
Is it possible that the time of day could affect my ping? Every day I get 20 + ping in a particular Ra3 server during the day. In the morning, up until about 10 my ping will stay at 30, but later on my ping doubles, but at 1 AM it goes back down.
I live in Phoenix now, so could that be it?
I'm only asking because I have a roommate that likes to torrent stuff all day. Often times I catch him torrenting during the day when I asked him to turn it off so I can play Q3. I can't tell anymore if his torrents are affecting my ping, since he lied about it a number of times Also, he has a wireless laptop, so he can download stuff and hide his laptop so that I can't shut off his torrents. My RA is getting annoyed at that, so...anyone have any solutions?

Re: Location + Time of Day
time of day can certainly affect your pings especially on cable (cox most likely in your case)Ganemi wrote:Is it possible that the time of day could affect my ping? Alright. Because I've been yelling at him for weeks to turn it off during the day. Last semester he wouldn't turn shit on until the night, but now he started doing it randomly, and my ping gets royally fucked in Quake 4, doubles in Quake 3, and goes +33% in Q2.
Now I started to realize that even though I plug in through the cable mode, instead of through the router my ping is still screwed during the day.
It still pisses me off though, because much of the time I'd ask and he'd be lying because my ping would be far too bad for any normal circumstances to be affecting it, and when I'd shut down his downloads my ping would drop to it's usually midday fucked state.
But whatever, I still do need to know how to do that MAC filtering thing, since he lied to my face again the other day. I have no idea what the MAC thing is, though. : P

This would do wonders in your situation: http://www.cfos.de/speed/cfosspeed_e.htm
Get the beta: http://www.cfos.de/beta/
you might need it installed on both machines that are using the bw, but first try it on your machine only and see if it helps
spend a little while getting it configured right and you should see good results

I've had these issues before, just tell him to cap his uploads and downloads to some 75-80% of the maximum line speed. Use a percentage rather than fixed number because cable throughput is variable (one hopes the program will adjust accordingly). That should leave enough for you to game without crappy ping.
I checked and rechecked, and even if he sets his downloads to 10 kbps I have a rough time playing ra3, what with people having 10-30 ping, and me getting 50-100
My ping should be 30, at which point I can take on just about anyone, but he downloads at 10 kbps all day, and it continuously fucks up my ping.
I just needs something that could decipher everyone on the router's bandwidth usage, so I can disable his connection if he's going to continue being a dick about it.

when my gf is downloading with torrents my connection goes from my normal broadband state to that of dial up...limiting it by a % does nothing..
when i asked someone here about it, they said something like ' its not the actually bandwidth that is going down, its the fact that torrents will use a lot of separate connections'
the only solution ive found is to pull her connection...
ive she limits herself to just one download at a time, then i get a kinda ok-ish connection.
tell the cunt if he continues to use torrents when you want to game, then you will:
a. kick his ass
b. break his laptop
c. call RIAA and have him busted
personally, i would get and pay for my own connection. let him pay for his own connection and do with it as he wishes.
