sounds like it installed a dialer ?
i was able to save a freinds computer when Norton refused to get rid of the virus.
if anti-virus software fails
check what programs are running "3 finger salute " then each item you don't recognize use google for that item.
example : mydialer.com ...google mydialer.com and you may see a link on how to remove it.
i was able to rid him of 10 programs that a virus installed simple by searching and deleing registry keys and folders.
jv16powertools really helped http://www.jv16.org
the whole process took 4 hours after many antivirus programs failed miserably.
try another virus scanner .. maybe one that is online based.

before i answer any questions, i just wanna add that
about 30 mins after installing Avast, i tried scanning all my drives, my Maxtor clicked and froze up a few times, and i've never had this happen with AVG..
shut the bitch off for 30 mins and it seems its back to normal, but i'm not brave enough to trying it again..

How do you check which programs are using the 3 finger salute?
I assume you mean crt/alt/del
and why does it matter?
a program is running that makes the popups and uses his connection .. kill that process from starting at startup and problem gone.
jv16powertools allows you to delete items at startup and gives clues which folder to delete and clues to what to look for in the registry.
this of course is done after anti-virus software has failed or has been crippled.
ctrl alt delete to see what's running.
my freinds comp was so riddled with viruses it took forever to clean it but i managed luckily without hosing his system.
