I find CGI human faces to be the real test.

They're a test in motion, but water is as much so, I think. I guess the difference is that badly moving water just looks like SplishSplash's sock drawer, but a badly animated face is much creepier.

I've seen plenty of CGI water that looks incredibly real. Never seen a CGI human face that even comes close.
