Software Rendering

Post by a13n »

Is it possible for a faster CPU to softwarely render the exact same scene with the one by opengl renderer?
If the clock of CPU were to rise up or evolve continuously, someday could it happen that hardware accelerator becomes unnecessary? (though I know it never happens, even if possible, due to the conspiracy of the industry.)

I would like to say no... but considering there really are no limits what we can do with software in general, a software render that matches, or even does better than opengl is possible. But like you said... the CPU wouldn't really handle that. Perhaps trying to do this with something like Quake2 at this point in time would be possible, but Doom3/Quake4... I don't think anybody could software render that nicely at this point in time

You made me think about OUTCAST. An excellent game that only ran by cpu.

Sure, but it'd be stupid. The CPU is the proverbial jack of all trades, master of none while the GPU is a special purpose device built for crunching 3D numbers. Let it do what it is good at and meant for.

Would still be nice to have a software renderer to fall back on if you videocard happens to fry like mine did. It's been 1 month since I've last played Quake 3. :icon23:

get a cheapo vid-card... a 64MB card will get you decent enough framerates in Q3. Even a 32 will get you by, but probly not at a resolution higher than 800x600.

But isn't that possible that it was intentionally designed that way?
Though I know little about the electronic circuit, my sixth sense tells me that this is the main dish conspiracy of the gfx industry including software companies.
This guessing also turnes out that ultra tiny GPU such as "Geforce2 Go" had already been developed and available from the early stage but never been released based on the strategy of the industry.
As a result the best strategy for us, namely powerless consumers, would be just to be more patient and wait longer till the target conspiracy is executed. :olo:

You should stop visiting conspiracy theory websites.

I rarely borrow a consipiracy theory form others.
In fact there are also quite a few websites which maliciously mislead the truth-seekers with demagoguery.
In most cases I establish my own theory.
For example I found the not-so-famous raven-creatvie sound blaster conspiracy by myself. (around SoFII)
And this proves my old assumption that both sw and hw industry are definitely cooperating effectively.
In other words they are all based on the same capital and this capital has definitely something to do with WWII.
Because most of the hws, especailly gfx boards, in Asia are made in Taiwan or Hongkong.
Now Chinese abroad, namely traiters in south, pop up into view who spread opium in China and caused opium war in 1840.
It goes without saying that cocky jap traiters also used the same method in WWII.

Once again, a13n's tinfoil hat is wrapped around his head a little too tight.
