I gots teh smarts :D

If you're thinking of it, I'd recommend buying second hand and being prepared to buy a new battery for the unit. Go for a model which was high-end when released, doesn't matter if they're old cause the old high-end laptops absolutely smoke the new low and mid-ranged laptops, even if the newer ones have much higher specs. They're just built worse, run hotter, clunk along, have shitty BIOS... and so on.

I totally lucked out with this one, 20 quid and appears to have been turned on about 5 times in its life :D
I might have to hit teh ebay!

:icon14:

got two old panasonic toughbooks that i picked up for less than £150 each with extra batteries and wifi cards (and extra memory in one of them). if i'm just doing admin or web stuff then they're more than up to the task. as well as the power saving benefits - it's great having something to work on that's portable, sturdy, quiet, reliable and as good as disposable. started working from a truecrypt disk a while back so syncing with my desktops at home/work is a doddle. just xcopy or grab the whole disk.

all i need to do now is trade my brain in for one with functioning short term memory and some patience and i'll be totally sorted :)

Laptop is 18.5V*3.5A so 65 watts

Desktop is 600 watts

So using laptop can cut electricity down by a factor of 9. Makes my bills a lot cheaper :)
huh, lol ,what? You may have a 600w psu in your pc, but its only drawing the power demanded by your internal components.

that sounds right, but some of them have like 4 fans on them and if they are not temperature switched then you could say that it does pull a little more juice than a smaller psu :icon30: :icon30:

on an adjacent note, having more than one HDD is usually the easiest (passive) way to waste electricity.
