Forum Bots.........

Post by ForM »

Lets say I had a forum I ran. And even though it gets little traffic, it gets spamed up by bot postings, such as Save money and get a new loan ........ various and abusive.

So If I know th urls' end in .ur , how could one block any posters from .ur that obviously just let a bot program spam a forum?

Now when I say spam, I mean anywhere from 1 to 100 posts a day. It's just relentless and it really needs to be brought under some kind of control.

Tips?

If you're using the garbled numbers and letters image for human verification, then it's obviously the work of people signing up spam accounts.

Well they wouldn't be manually registering if it's a forum that see little traffic.

If you're using a certain forum, I'd check to see what they have to disable this.

At least these bots include jokes before spamming the links :olo:

It's called a CAPTCHA. @Form: what forum software are you using?

Well after looking at this thread I realized we haven't seen bots on this site for awhile. So I decided to click the register button to see what was going on.

Off the top of my head: General admin -> Configuration -> Enable visual confirmation

Any commonly used board like phpBB is going to be familiar to bots. One trick is to make your registration page nonstandard.

Even with the captcha my board still got spammed. Once I added a simple question to my registration the bots ceased being a problem.
