Win98SE and the New PB

I have been playing Q3Arena v 1.32 online for quite awhile (yrs). In the last month or so I cannot 'Enable' PB in Multi-Player mode, or in any mode that I've tried.

PB client version: 1.524|A1353
PB server version: 1.261|A1353|C1.254

I even uninstalled PR1.32 and then Q3Arena (including deleting the Quake 111 Arena folder, cleaned out the Registry , rebooted and reinstalled Q3Arena and then PR1.32.
I could now 'Enable' PB but it would not update during gameplay, so I got kicked into Spectator mode.
I even bypassed my router, shut off my firewall, and turned off my AVG anti-virus program and it still wouldn't update automatically.
(I have automatic downloading ON)
Then I used PBSetup.exe and it said it updated properly but then, I could never get PB to 'Enable' again.
I went into q3config.cfg and changed cl_punkbuster to a 1 value.
Still no luck. It just changes back to 0 when I check it after trying the game.
Using the ~ key and typing in /cl_punkbuster 1 or /seta cl_punkbuster 1 , I receive the message that 'cl_punkbuster is read only' even though the attribute for that entry in q3config.cfg is 'archive' and not 'read only'.
Does anyone know if the 'new' PB will work with Win98SE?

PS:Hopefully it will be a simple fix and if I ever get it figured out, I will post the solution. I have over 10hrs in this already. :icon23:

LOL! go back to the part when you got put in spectator mode,it makes you do this untill its finished.
you cant even follow anyone while this is going on,after a few minutes some blue type will come up in the console...that means its done. sounds to me like you just didnt wait long enough.

Hi again, tombston3r,
I knew that about spec mode and I waited for over 20min.
My pb ver was 0.993 and it would not update during spec mode.
I tried pbweb.exe and it updated and then I again could not get PB to Enable again with the update in place.
I copied all in the PB folder to another folder and then deleted the contents of the original PB folder.
I then tried pbsetup.exe and it updated Q3A and PB.
Again, I still cannot get into Enable mode.
If I replace the contents of the PB folder (in Q3Arena) with the original contents that PR 1.32 put in, it will Enable, but the version is 0.993.
Hopefully there is an answer out there. :icon26:

fyi after u hit the update in pbsetup it shows something like .99whatever click that and hit update agian.
it dosent say to do this in the directions.

Still no luck.
I did notice that if I just change the pbcl.dll file in PB, it reverts back to the PB v 0.993 and it will then allow PB to Enable, but still no way to update online, even after waiting 20min in spectator mode.
I really believe that it has something to do with the PB update (cl version 1.524) and Win98SE.
I even used two 'even-balance' trouble tickets and never got reply.

Well, I installed the game in Win2000Pro and it would not update when being on online play, but when I used PBSetup, it worked just fine and would Enable in Multi-Player.
It sure seems like the new PB is incompatible with Win98SE in Q3Arena.
I am still interested in why it doesn't work on my Win98SE since I can't find anywhere that EvenBalance says it doesn't.
