Post by SteF »

How come when i connect to a map,
and say its Excessive the transfer rate is 2kb/s???

My net speed is 512 kbps...

also whilst playing ping reaches up to 400!!

shouldn't it be about 150-250?

map downloads are painfully slow through the q3 protocol.

as for your ping. it shouldnt be so low, but it kinda depends on where you are and where the server is.

quick fix, try setting your q3 transfer rate to a more appropriate setting - it's default is a 33k6 rate.

I'm on 20meg, and its about the same.

Its supposed to be that way because your downloading from the server and not being redirected to an FTP, which means you cant have any more or you will destroy the game in progress for everybody else with lag.

Its just the way it is.

I seem to remember the max upload from a q3 server was in the low 10 to 15kb....?

I can't remember what setting it was off-hand that corresponded to
the upload rate to a client.... but I do know that the 10kb -13kb maybe
was definately the case when I connected to most servers.

In fact I dusted of Q3 a few weeks ago and went looking for a Threewave server. I was by no means up-to-date with patches.

I found myself downloading at 13kb if I'm not mistaken.

So the 2kb download could just mean alot of people are either downloading as well.
Or the server is just setup for a low upload to clients so as to not
ruin the game for the players already on the server.

Oh god.... what a bunch of dribble...... Sorry for the babbling. :icon32:

try /set rate 90000 some servers allow this for faster downloading. but in game it will still cap it at 25 or 30000

i think download rate is tied to SV_MaxRate .

It is. The server has the final say in the transfer rate. ioquake3 however has support for HTTP redirects, which allows for much faster downloads. Only works with ioquake3 servers, though.
