I have just started to play this game again after many years. However this is my first time playing online without a crappy internet connection. I have a local high speed cable modem hook up but I am sad to report that my ping is usually about 180 +. I am not sure if there is something I should be doing to get it to run better or not. My Counter Strike Source game runs fine at like 30 which is normal. I have tried disabeling my firewall, internet and making sure that nothing was running in the background. I even changed my video settings down (which is crazy cause I have a 256mb card)
Does anyone know what might be causing my ping to be so high? I called my ISP and they are suppose to send someone over. But the last time they did that the guy didn't do squat and left with no answer to my question.

I tried two different ones. Both of them timed out every time. I can connect to them in the game, but not ping them.
Code: Select all
C:\Users\Nathan & Amanda>ping 216.12.96.42
Pinging 216.12.96.42 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 216.12.96.42:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
C:\Users\Nathan & Amanda>ping 87.165.242.110

I am not sure how to check that in Vista. I can go to administrative firewall settings and check the protocol for quake 3 which is UDP and TCP (there are two quake 3's listed).
I could change it to ICMPv6 or 4.
But I am not sure what to do about it really.
**EDIT**
I checked and there are no outbound connections for quake 3 but only inbound protocol's.
Does this matter?

You can try messing around with the Q3 net settings i guess
Enter the following in the console (press the tilde (~) key to bring it down)
/rate 25000
/cl_maxpackets 100
/snaps 40
Also I suggest using a game server browser like QTracker or All-Seeing Eye as opposed to the in-game browser, if you aren't already.
