Have you seen some of the reviews? Ouch, the card pretty much blows. Chalk up another loss for ati/amd (man I bet they are sure wishing they hadn't bought ati last year now)

ATI drops the ball with their dx10 card
"The ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT however is more akin to NVIDIA’s GeForce FX 5800."
lol ouch. I know some will say that you can wait for the drivers to mature, but why should we do that? Why is it every product ships sub-standard these days and we basically need to "wait" for it to mature? No thanks, if I was in the market for a new card right about now I would definately go nvidia.

There aren't any proper DX10 benchmarks yet, but yes, it doesn't look good for AMD/ATi.
What we can hope for now is a quick refresh like the one they did with the x1800->x1900 series, but by then nVidia will probably already released their own refresh of the G80, so things are looking kinda bad for AMD/ATi at the moment.
It's a shame, because we could use the competition. A couple of years ago the super high end card was around $400, now it's $600 (or $900 if you count the 8800Ultra).

which 8800 was it supposed to compete with?
the 2900xt is a $399 card.(msrp, it will go down shortly after launch) is it supposed to compete with the $900 ultra or the $599 gtx?
$399 for a card that bests the gtx in some games and comes with the half life 2 black box bundle sounds like a good deal to me.
linking to a "[H]ard on for nvidia" review of an ati card. :larf: is that the same guy who said the 5800 series was top notch?
