Friend having issues with CD drive

Post by Captain »

She says she can't open the drive, no matter how much she pushes the button. As well, when she uses a pin to force it open, then put a CD in it and close it again, it begins making loud whirring noises, suddenly stopping.

She says it's linked to the drives on her computer renaming themselves a couple weeks ago. For example, her external HDD used to be labeled 'G', but is now 'E', breaking access to programs that were installed on the drive, such as Photoshop. An attempt to open Photoshop will result in a "disk not in drive" error.

I was going to advise her to take a look at her BIOS, as I think the problem may be presiding there. She's not the most tech-savvy of people though :(

Any help would be appreciated.

My guess would be the drive is fucked. Can you replace it with a temp drive to test? And are you sure you mean floppy and not cd drive?

You're right, it's the CD drive. My mistake :icon31:

I'll tell her to buy a new drive and change the drive letters with disk manager.

I'm not absolutely sure it's the drive. Why I suggested testing it with a spare drive if you have one before she lays out money for a new one.

Maybe one of the rubber tracks came loose. I'd crack it open and take a look inside the drive.
