I've been doing the job for six fucking years and the cunts just now decided to promote me after I told them I wasn't going to work for free anymore. How much longer until you defend the dissertation? Although, by the time you get to the defense, you are done...nobody fails that. If I wouldn't have quit, I'd have had that fucking PhD 7 years ago...I hate to think about that. All the coursework done, and nothing to show for it. What's your dissertation on? I skimmed an immuno textbook a couple months ago - holy crap has a lot of progress been made since I took immunology in grad school...

And my profession hasn't changed.

Our program has a 5-year average, which would put my graduation next summer. My adviser is pretty good about getting students out by that time, so that’s what he’s been telling me to expect.

I’m only cautiously optimistic, though. The nature of my thesis involves slow progress (lots of waiting for mice to develop tumors), and I’ve been here four years and we just put together our first manuscript (submitted to Nature and Science, but rejected on grounds of being partially scooped by a jerk who decided not to collaborate and publish quickly in Blood).

So we’ll see what happens. My thesis is looking at early B cell developmental pathways and how they contribute to leukemia. We’ve got a really interesting model that predicts treatment response in humans, but still have a lot of mechanism left to describe.

My main objective for getting my PhD is solely to teach in college. It's too much work and stress trying to keep up on all the newest research and how it affects you and your grants.
