What's more naive is thinking that advanced alien creatures with technology capable of traversing immense distances would spend their time watching us kill each other and periodically playing bogeyman with us whenever some redneck has a camera.

Taking this thought on the basis of there being many alien species in the universe: Out of all the countless civilizations which are millions of years more advanced and out of all of the vast wonders of the universe...we really aren't that interesting.

Actually...it's not naivete....it's arrogance to think they'd be "watching us".

Think about this seriously for two whole seconds: If an alien race was advanced enough to make it here - and their rules forbid them from interacting with us - do you think they'd be dumb enough to be detected or caught?

The same people who believe in UFOs also believe in God for the same reason: They think that their lives are interesting to someone unimaginably more powerful than they are.

it's an interesting subject - but i really do find it hard to believe that the same people that spend a million dollars on a smart bomb that can barely hit the right zipcode could have all this whizzbang alien technology hidden away and not use it - unless the alien technology is just a spacefoil post-it note that says "people are dumb and easy to frighten".

the technology stuff was kind of offensive. we didn't steal fibreoptics from the martians, we came up with it over a long period of time. same as new shapes for planes, composite materials and more efficient engines. people go to school, they go to college, they dedicate their lives to a subject to come up with these inventions. i don't like the idea that some brain oxygen-starved trekkie is claiming that they didn't.

Innit. The absurd position of 'I don't understand this fully so I'm gonna make up my own story about it and believe that instead' is oddly reminiscent of religion.

I'm not saying I believe there are bases on the moon by any means.

But to say that so many government officials are just making stuff up seems as silly as listening to what they have to say, because they don't have any motive to make the stuff up.

It's not like they sat down one day and thought long and hard about it, and finally decided, "You know, I think I want to endure long years of ridicule and contempt from just about everyone I speak to. Making up some stories about alien sightings seems like the perfect way to accomplish that."

That documentary has its weak spots certainly -- but there are a couple of people in it who are very hard to ignore.
