AMD vs Intel

Post by Fanatic X »

Hey guys, quick question...

Between:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor 5600+

Intel Core2 Duo Processor E6600(4MB L2 Cache,2.4GHz,1066 FSB)

For running photoshop CS/Nikon Capture/PhotoMatrix/other photo programs, with minimal wait time, which processor should I get?

Probably not much difference?

The rest of the comp will be equiped with 2-4GB ram and 256mb 8600 GTS.

Will the 256MB ATI Radeon X1300 Pro be good enough as well?

Not going to be much of a gaming machine, just for photo intensive aps and other multi-tasking stuff.

...and you thought I was about to wage a war. *remembers the golden days of Intel vs AMD in the tech forum*

I believe you'll find that the Core 2 Duo will smoke the AMD. I'm going off of anecdotal evidence here, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Just an idea of the kind of stuff I will be using the comp for...but at much larger resolutions and file sizes.

Need good performance for cheap..

MacPro 2.66GHz ftw. Otherwise the Intel.

Here's the deal, though... Memory is going to be a bigger issue for you than processor if you like to edit a lot of things at once. 32-bit XP/Vista will only let you use 2GB or 3 with special boot parameters. You could run 64-bit windows and load up on RAM, but a so far those have proven to suck when it comes to supported apps and drivers.

On the other hand, you can load up a Mac with RAM until you run out of money, and even run Windows on it to play the occasional game.

yea but 4gb of DDR2 right now is like $200, compared to the assfuck that mac will do to him. go with the core 2 duo. or wait until july 22nd and get the quad core for $230-260. (i'd wait)

edit: "July 22nd the Q6600 (4 x 2.4GHz) and the E6850 (2 x 3.0GHz) will both be priced at $266."

I hope all of his Nikon and other editing apps will work... If they don't he's not going to get very far.

if compatibilities a problem, just go with 32 bit and you lost what, a 600 megs of memory? fuck it. you're saving like $2000.

Yeah, what the hell do I know about what kind of workload FX might be running into? Just because I routinely max out my 4GB of ram using the same kinds of apps he uses doesn't mean I know what might be useful to consider.

you suggested something that costs like $3000+
i hardly call that help. pirate OSX if its really that big of a fucking deal.
hes looking at a $1200 build compared to mac and their constant fucking over of customers with hardware prices.

i'm not saying osx is the wrong choice, i'm saying based on price the mac is a scam

Isn't photoshop cs3 64-bit ready? Check if camera drivers are etc.

And if he gets his apps and drivers working natively in 64bit won't that run faster than osx? (4gb of pc ram is cheap as fuck too. If you skip getting a new geforce 8800 gfx card, you can get something like an 6800 and get 8gigs of ram) :paranoid:

Go back and read my original post. I never said he should get a Mac, I said he should go Intel. I merely suggested that he consider the RAM issue if he edits huge projects all at once. The Mac just happens to run the apps he wants, with the benefits of being able to run in a mixed 64/32-bit environment without the practical RAM limitations of 32-bit Windows.

If he were to get a 32-bit PC for 1200 bucks now (assuming Win64 won't work), then realize a year from now he needs more horsepower and gets something bigger for another 1200, he's almost bought the Mac. There's a reason my Macs last about 5 years and my PCs last about 2. 1200 every 2 or 3000 every 5 ends up costing the same. Plus you have the added advantage of high ebay resale value with the Mac. My $3000 Mac less the $1500 I'm selling the old one for on ebay evens the playing field considerably.

Dave what did you mean when you said you can get a mac and it will last you 5 years vs 2 for a pc? If we both get a c2d, 4gb ram, a geforce 7800. Same hardware, so how does it last you longer?

Don't wanna start a fight here, just curious

Thats such a 'mac' mentality. "OH MY GOD ITS SLOW, BUY A NEW MACHINE!" learn to upgrade. save yourself a lot of cash.

The reason your macs last 5 years is because it costs $3500 dollars every time you want to upgrade. thats absurd. You're 5 year old mac is a piece of shit. the fact that you find some mac fanboy to buy it for $1500 is a fucking shame, and you both should be shot.

ok here we go:
mac pro
(2x) 2.66 dual core xeons
4GB of memory
500gb HD
ATI x1900XT 512MB
1 'superdrive'
1 keyboard + 'mighty mouse'
OSX
$3,447 before shipping

intel:
1 Quad Core 2.4ghz - $266
4GB of memory - $220
500gb HD - $120
8800GTS 640 - $350
16x DVD burner - $30
1 decent keyboard + mouse - $100 (sure ok, why not?)
Vista 32bit (business) - 139
or Vista 64bit (business) - 149
$1,374 before shipping

not to mention he can upgrade the processor or hell, overclock the thing a couple hundred Mhz easily, and smoke the Mac.
