can't get a contiguous pagefile

Post by Fender »

40 GB HD, 2 GB RAM
30 GB Free
I've defragged multiple times, with pagefile and system restore turned off. I create a 3 GB pagefile... 2 fragments every time. The contiguous free space, guessing from defrag util, is at least 15 GB. wtf is going on?
I've also tried sysinternals pagedefrag, on an existing pagefile, with no luck.

OS and file system?

I would guess it gets split into 2Gb chunks

XP SP2 & NTFS
I've never had this problem on XP before.
And the 1st chunk appears to be tiny. I'm guessing only a couple hundred MB.

Does it matter? With 2 GB you should be pretty swap-safe. And besides, the OS only swaps memory in 4K chunks, so the layout of your page file will make little difference.
