Map loading is very slow

Post by UndeaD_ZeuS »

Ok I have a major problem. When I enter a game, loading a map, sounds, and player models takes a long time to load(which is approximately 30 seconds or more) and I know it has loaded faster than this (nearly instant). Also, when someone joins a game, my computer needs to load their model, so Quake 3 hangs as it's trying to load the model. Is there any way I can fix/improve this?

not sure about your map/sounds loading problem, but this will fix your second problem:

open the console by using the (~) key, and type:

/set cg_forceModel 1

"This setting is helpful if you wish for all players to look identical to your player model and use the same hitbox. You can set this to 0 if you prefer to see other players’ model choices."

The thing is though, it didn't used to take this long to load character models (ingame and pregame), and maps and sounds at the beginning.

Assuming you are using Windows, have you done a disk defrag and cleanup recently?

I'll do one right now and post my results.

I didn't see any difference in loading maps, models and sounds. I do remember I opened up the PK3 file once to extract some of the sounds. Could this be the cause?

Not if you didn't alter the PK3. What are your system specs?

Well I think I may have found the problem. My harddrive is an IDE drive with 5200(5400?)RPMs and 2MB disk cache. It is pretty old, and I took it out of a craputer (compaq) so maybe it is dying? I think I'm just going to buy a new harddrive and ghost this harddrive to the other one.
