Has anyone built one recently.
I'm thinking about putting one together.
Or I might just rent one from Bell.
If I build one myself, can someone recommend parts?

I have 2 80 gig sata drives (which wouldn't hold much), but I'll probably buy 2 320 gig sata drives.
Might get this case.
Then all I need is a cpu, motherboard, ram, video cards & software.

I don't need cards that record HD. I just want something that records shows from my satellite dish.

After just looking at a case, hard drives, video card and cpu, it's like up around $600.
But I'd just need the motherboard and ram.

I'm not sure what bell charges to buy one from them. Or I might just rent one.

IMO

Home made Media Center/PVR units look impressive, but are verry costly and sometimes hard to maintain if you are like me an keep adding features.

My Windows MCE box went from spare parts, to a full blown expensive pain in the ass. Which I then traded in for a High definition box from my cable company.

The HD box is easier to use, and more reliable. You can also call and demand a new one when it breaks.

They have two different ones from Bell. The cheaper one, if you are recording a show, you have to watch it. And that one is 299.

The other one has two tuner cards and goes for $599.

Well you need a high def t.v. to fucking use one of their pvr's.

Where do you live?

In NJ both Cablevision and Verizon rent the DVRs to you for between $12 and $15 a month.

I'm in Ottawa, Ontario.
They do rent them. For $10 and $20 for the single tuner and double tuner. But you Still need a high def tv.
