I don't see where I'm disagreeing with mrd's post. Guitarists regularly start going on about "it's what you don't play" when confonted with somone else's better technique precisely because they ARE egotistical morons. Pay attention.
That said, sax players are even worse egotists than guitarists and jazz disappeared up it's collective arsehole in about 1970.

Yes, there are most certainly many musicians who lack technical ability and make excuses to justify themselves by saying lots of technique isn't necessary. However, you seem to be basing your opinion solely on that. Since you're a player yourself, I don't quite understand why you don't realise that less is more in many, many musical situations, and that saying "it's what you don't play" is not just a phrase simply reserved for less talented musicians, but rather it's a universal acknowledgement by musicians in the know.
Btw, you guys must have been talking with really fucking asshole of guitarists. I'm a hoby guitarist myself and so is a friend of mine. We just play for ourself for fun. Then we have a mutual friend who's is very talented guitar player, but very humble. He knows ALLOT when it comes to style, guitar techniques, guitar players etc etc. But he never has an ego about anything. He was the person that told me: you wouldn't notice it, but Prince is a fucking great guitarist. Just shows how open minded he is.
Indeed! Ridiculous statement if ever I heard one. If jazz disappeared up it's asshole around 1970, then I guess chick corea, weather report, steps ahead, pat metheny, dave weckl, etc must be a figment of everyones imagination and never existed at all between the 1970s and the present and have never been popular artists in their field.

I'm with Geebs on this one. Wynton Marsalis is the only jazz musician I've liked from the last couple decades, and Marsalis is known for his criticism of contemporary jazz. There may be a couple more, but he's seriously the only one I can think of off the top of my head.
Jazz - as Geebs said - is at least as pretentious in many its incarnations. Worst of all, the now-infamous Fusion-type of "music": Horrible sounding, prentenious and not musical at all.
