Changing XP Themes
Changing XP Themes
I know some of us like a custom look for our desktop. There are some programs like "Windowblinds" that work, but only "skin over" the existing theme and use a lot of resources.
Well, I found a way that uses the existing Windows theme system and makes XP have the ability to be customized! Best thing about it! It's free
Go to >>HERE<< and download the patch. Go to your Control panel and set theme to Windows XP. Unzip the patch anywhere and run it. This program will change a .dll that is file protected, so when prompted to insert XP CD, cancel it and ignore warnings. You will then be prompted to reboot your computer. Wait the full minute as asked and click to reboot.
Now you are set to go to >>DEVIANT ART<<
Download your favorite visual styles, unzip anywhere, but make sure you paste the visual style to c/Windows/Resources for them to work. Some of the .zip or .rar files will do it for you. When you go into the Resources file, you can double-click any one of your styles and BLAMO!
If you have trouble with the install, please read THIS

Re: Changing XP Themes
I've been doing this for years, (except manually installing the .dll) and I would have picked a better theme.

You might want to give Compiz Fusion a try. They re-merged the Compiz and Beryl branches back into a single kit that features the best of both worlds.
What's that, Vista has 3D window flipping and you call that a fancy new feature? Pffttt!

Re: Changing XP Themes
I find all that flashy stuff to be useless, especially the window flipping shit in vista and that dumb cube rotation thing in Beryl.
The wibbly windows in xgl are alright though. Not useful but not detracting from anything either.

Re: Changing XP Themes
well if you use virtual desktops the cube is great. i've got the wobbly windows too, but of course there's no use for it other than the neato factor. also, it's all free, so yippee
Re: Changing XP Themes
I find the virtual desktop cube to be useful when working with multiple programs and windows. You're right that most of it is just eye candy that you could do without, but since it runs so well that it doesn't affect performance in the slightest (not that I can tell), I might as well have it look pretty. I can't say the same for Vista though, seems to lag at certain times when using any of the 3D stuff.

exacto-mundo. i'm surprised all of the effects run as silky smooth as it does on my old-ass box with 512mb RAM. rofl.
Re: Changing XP Themes
I haven't actually bothered upgrading to Fusion yet, been waiting for Gutsy Gibbon before I do so, where it will probably be part of the repository. Nice to see it working for you though.
BTW, is that iTunes running on Ubuntu or just the icon for one of the other media players?

Re: Changing XP Themes
no itunes - just part of an icon pack that's used by default for a media player (xmms). i just haven't gotten around to changing it yet.

they're still working on bugs if you read through some of that thread toward the end. that's an .exe too, i wonder if the end effects are easily reversible if it hoses something on your box.

no, i download the same day. the tier package here in NY for roadrunner is a ripoff and Speed is the only channel i'd watch out of that entire tier, so fuck them. vlc all the way
