Linksys WRT54GL
Well I just got a Linksys WRT54GL. How exactly does one instal the DD-WRT firmware, and what all does it do?

Re: Linksys WRT54GL
DD-WRT is an open-source Linux based firmware for your router. It gives you loads of advanced features on your router that Linksys's firmware doesn't have. Better security, better transmission tweaks, port forwarding, QoS, etc, etc.
Don't install over wireless, since a lost connection could brick your router.
Other than that, follow handy instructions here:

Re: Linksys WRT54GL
Well I have sucessfully flashed my WRT54GL with DD-WRT 23 SP2. Works wonderfully. I am using WPA2 Pre-Shared Key Only with a random generated 63 character key. SPI is on, SSID broadcasting is disabled. This will be used in my dorm room and my 360 and desktop will be connected via eternet and my laptop via wieless. Any other security tips?

Change your login name and password if you haven't already. It's pretty safe to stick a post it note on the bottom of the router so you don't forget it.
You may need to open ports for certain programs and games and also set up QoS.

Oh yea, I changed the password, logic is still root, but password is alphanumeric. What exactly does QoS do, I've heard of it, but never really known what it does.

Re: Linksys WRT54GL
Quality of Service, you can set certain traffic to take priority over others. Like set gaming to a higher priority over http protocols and set bittorrent downloads to a lower priority to work in the background.

Re: Linksys WRT54GL
as great as the QOS is on DD-wrt, back on my old connection ( 70K/sec down.. max ) it was hard to set it up.. wile now on my new line ( 300+ksec down ) it works wayy beter..
i just wish they put in a K/sec Cap on a MAc addy..
Though, they Do offer it on ports on the router

Re: Linksys WRT54GL
I did my WRT54GS v5, the one Linksys neutered early on to prevent these third-party firmwares from being developed (before the release of GL as I understand it).
Anyway, it was a somewhat involved process but I managed to load the wrt23 SP2 micro firmware from DD-WRT (stable build). Had a spartan but highly functional GUI, some badly wanted features there so I'd say I'm satisfied early on. Report more as I see fit.
