Campaq laptop and windows 98

Post by corpse »

Friend gave me an older laptop [amd 3000 with a GB of RAM]. Had XP installed but was very slow. Formatted and tried instaling Windows 98 so it would be faster. I get to the screen that says "Starting to run windows 98 for the first time and the computer reboots. Keeps doing that.

I installed XP after 2 attempts at 98 failed. Installs XP home just fine.

ANy ideas why it wont finish installing Windows 98?

Dunno. But try adding a bigger hard drive, turning off 'system restore' and setting the paging file to a fixed size of 2048/2048.

This usually increases performance by a good margin.

when you say "had xp installed" did you mean it was already installed when you got it? a fresh install or an old one? if it's an old one, not sure why you'd even think of 98 since you could've been dealing with a laptop riddled with spyware and all kinds of shit eating up memory in the background.

now you say you installed xp home just fine, but is it still slow? an amd 3000 with a GB of RAM is PLENTY for XP.

There is no system restore in 98.

Maybe CPU cache is disabled in the BIOS, so check in there and reset to defaults.

xp can see the ram, and cpu speeds dont matter..

#1, totally wipe the drive

#2, bios update, or find out if yours has a problem..
