My parents recently changed their ISP, from Optimum Online 14000/1500kbps to Verizon ~750/120kbps to save money. I didn't really mind as I'm usually away at college and all they use the computer is for email & internet (plus it's 30 bux cheaper).
At school, the speeds are around 4000/4000, and there is 4GB/512MB bandwidth limit per 7 days. Be sure to check your college's network rules and policies. Fortunately, we have a DirectConnect hub, which allows us to bypass that.
As amidy said, be a little careful. I know the RIAA have been pressuring colleges to take more action with piracy--such as sending "pre-litigation" letters to some:
