No maron, CoH had Securom protection that wouldn't allow you to run your legally purchased copy if you had any drive emulation software installed.

Dave wrote:I think calling the DRM client this thing installs a "rootkit" is a bit sensationalist. No matter how retarded the notion, the licensor of the software should have the right to ensure their license is being properly adhered to through a manner other than good faith trust as long as it's disclosed in an EULA. I guess all of those SMS clients I deploy to unknowing/unsuspecting users are rootkits too.

If consumers don't agree with the license, they should avoid the software and maybe the publisher will get a clue next time...
I don't know the details of this particular copy protection (whether it's really a rootkit or not), and that seems to be the important question here.

Because you're right - game companies should have the ability to make sure their stuff isn't getting pirated, if they choose to try that. But a rootkit is a different beast. Even if you buried something in the EULA saying that you agree to install a copy protection feature, a rootkit does (or at least can do) irreversible action on a normal user's PC, requiring them to pay somebody to get it back to its original state.

So if this thing really is a rootkit, then I'd say it's a real issue; otherwise, probably not so much.

BTW tho -- surely you realize your SMS software deployments are just a touch different than this situation, right? ;)
