tbh i wouldn't be in the slightest bit surprised if there was no other intelligent life on any other planet in the universe. there may be a bajillion planets out there with an environment more or less capable of supporting life forms, but the probability of another one having some kind of advanced (in human terms) species living on it is very small, when you consider all the conditions that had to be met just for humans to exist (not to mention sheer blind luck)

Well, if you limit it to the conditions that had to be met just for "humans" (specifically) to exist, then the odds would be pretty small (but I'd be willing to wager they would still be tenable to make a case that it would be likely to happen).

I would say that it's extremely probable (I would say a near certainty based on my limited knowledge) that complex life exists elsewhere in the universe.

But intelligence is a gray area, IMO. If we want to narrow down the likelihood of intelligent life existing elsewhere, then what benchmark would we use? Would we be looking for life as intelligent as late primates? Dolphins? Organisms that use tools? If you would agree that the existence of any of those levels of intelligence is probable elsewhere in the universe, then it would be hard to argue that more advanced intelligence, like our own, isn't probable as well. Because, once primate-level intelligence comes into existence, it really only seems a matter of time before more advanced intelligence does as well. That's not proven of course, but there is a basis for making such a claim.

I also think a strong component of the likelihood of such life existing, is the question of how improbable is it that cumulative selection could or would produce such a result?

If our current understanding of evolution is fairly accurate, then we know that there is no real "leap" between the intelligence of some animals and our own, so much as there is a gradual, cumulative "increase" in intelligence - and thus a gray area.

So unless you're talking about a specific quality or type of intelligence -- such as self-awareness -- then it would really be tricky to make the case that intelligence wouldn't be likely to exist, and still believe other forms of complex life are likely to.

And again, if you do want to narrow it down to something like self-awareness, then we would need to try to find out what sort of evolutionary changes are needed in order for self-awareness to exist to begin with, and then to see what sort of advantages each of those changes would give one species of organism over another, in order for it to be selected and then improved upon.

Instead of assuming that the odds of life evolving are minute on any given planet one should assume life will flourish wherever conditions allow it to flourish. If you want an example, just go check your kitchen sink next time you leave the dishes there for a week.

Seriously tho, if they find bacterial life on mars or any sign of life on mars in the past wouldn't that be evidence enough that life will flourish anywhere it can? two planets in 1 solar system containing life would be a clear indication that wherever it can be supported it will thrive.
