I've played the BETA and it's not all that. As a matter of fact, I'll prolly skip Crysis too. COD4 and Frontlines, fuels of war look like they're going to be the best.

Its being released for 360 and FailStation 3.Kracis wrote:I would if it was being released for the 360

I'll maybe pick it up when I'm bored of TF2 and they've removed the adverts.
That'll be "Never" then.

OHNO ADVERTS
its prolly just billboards in the enviroment. seeing how this game is played on Earth, its only natural to see ads, no?
it didnt hurt Splinter Cell at all (Palm, Axe), better yet, it made the game more realistic.
so fu rofl win2k kb/s kthx bbl

Adverts are in Crackdown as well, and it in no way hurts the game.
Sure, playing a future game and seeing an add for a film thats out this week is a little odd, but if you see that and not the 12 strogg in front of you... Your not playing right...

Sorry MKJ, it's just something I'd rather not see polluting games.
Besides which, their excuses for advertising in ET:QW are pathetic when you consider that games like TF2 will be successful and played for years without the addition of advertising revenue.
I also suspect that their promises of the funds being used to produce ongoing new content are fairly hollow, especially as traditionally FPS gamers tend to play only a select few maps out of the thousands available.
And finally, I've paid for a game, why the HELL should someone be entitled to invade my privacy by trying to sell me something during my recreation time?
If you're going to include advertising in games, deliver the game for free.
Edit: As for o'dium's point regarding Crackdown, I don't recall seeing a single real-world product advertised in Crackdown. Plenty of comedy products or fantasy products sure.

i'd agree with you if it would stop you fro playing the game. it doesnt.
do you boycott games that start with the nvidia "the way its meant to be played" leader as well?
or online games that have an ISPs logo on the box perhaps?

The nVidia point's a difficult one. No, I don't boycott those games, but at the same time, those advertisements usually don't appear in-game when you're actually playing.
I don't like how nVidia have managed to persuade so many developers to advertise their product, but at least it's a product related to the pastime.
How the FUCK is Nike related to my ability to play a game?
As for online games that have ISP logos on the box, I don't believe I own such a title. Perhaps that's not allowed under UK advertising regulations?
Another worry I have regarding advertorial content is the creative controls it places in the hands of the advertiser.
If an advertiser suspects that their product will be seen in a bad light purely because of the content of a game, they have some financial leverage against the developer when it comes to changing that content.
How long before this becomes political?

I think, much like the kids at gamefaqs. You're way over reacting.
Oh noes, a billboard, that changes on mapchange. Big deal.

Re: Quakewars available tomorrow in North America.
Oh, and all of that aside, the game's not really that good anyway.
Not a worthy sequel to RtCW's MP.
It makes my life a lot easier when products I boycott are wank in the first place.

this I can agree upon, and would indeed suck hard.Mat Linnett wrote:

the nike thing.. well no nike doesnt have anything to do with an interstellar war between cyborgs and humans, but since its set in a city its not like its out of place or anything. like i said, in this case it adds to the enviroment.
I would still rather have a passive Nike poster on a wall somewhere in the game than an nVidia intro serving no other purpose than making me wait.
Re: Quakewars available tomorrow in North America.
i'll skip this turd...
Re: Quakewars available tomorrow in North America.
I think you don't have to worry about this. Just compare it to old & established advertising mediums like TV and print, you don't see the same thing there. It's just not very interesting for a media agency to book advertising slots for say, a toy manufacter during a horror movie late at night. Someone will buy the slots - they always get sold - but it'll be a brand more suitable for the target audience, otherwise they're pissing away their advertising dollars.SOAPboy wrote:Another worry I have regarding advertorial content is the creative controls it places in the hands of the advertiser.

EDIT: on reflection, i realise that sponsors (especially main sponsors) do have major influence on the creative process.
It's probably also worth noting that advertising in games is still considered very revolutionary by the advertising business as a whole, and the actual effects are (as far as i know) still completely unknown.

Re: Quakewars available tomorrow in North America.
The ads in crackdown are the same as the ads in ET:QW. In fact, the ones in ET:QW you will probably see LESS. See those signs in the beta with the GDF on them? THOSE are the ads. Thats all.
The fact you never saw them in Crackdown, even though they were on every other street corner, should tell you that this really isn't a big deal.

Re: Quakewars available tomorrow in North America.
That's weird, I never ever saw a real-world ad in Crackdown. Having checked up online, it looks like they may only occur in the additional content.
That may explain why I never saw one; I very rarely play the street racing game.
That leaves a nasty taste in my mouth for sure as they've charged extra money in the form of Microsoft points for this additional content and yet saw fit to sneak in live advertising.

Re: Quakewars available tomorrow in North America.
Street racing game...? Well, thats wrong for a start because I only ever play crackdown to go and just run about.
Unless the addition content patch changed the way most billboard work, regardless. Last ad I saw was for Shoot em' up in Crackdown.
Either way, two points still stand. One, that ads are not that common or even a problem in ET:QW. Anything that funds servers is ok in my book. And two, the games really nto that fun to play for some reason, first id software game I haven't bought

Re: Quakewars available tomorrow in North America.
I just installed qw. In game ads? Just something for me to shoot at when there's no enemy around...
Re: Quakewars available tomorrow in North America.
I have it preordered and I'm going to pick it up on Thursday (if I can find my preorder receipt).

If you're going to include advertising in games, deliver the game for free.

More specifically:
If you're going to include advertising in games, deliver the game for free.
It's as simple as that. I buy the game with my money. I want no adds in that game that are going to make someone else money on top of the fact that the action of me buying the game is the enabling act that makes them money from these advertisements. I simply don't want adds paying for something that I already bought. Imagine if you had TV commercials infused in to the DVD's you buy of your favorite series, every 10 minutes a commercial plays. Thats what TV is for and its FREE. Imagine you had adds printed on a refrigerator you buy. Or adds splattered all over your new car.
The fact is, if we pay for it; we don't want adds in it. If it's free, the adds are more than welcome.
Simple as that.
Re: Quakewars available tomorrow in North America.
The funny thing is, advertisements are so infused into almost every type of media that it's almost impossible to find something without it, and for the most part, it is so infused and constant that most of the time you fail to even recognize that it's there.
Are you aware of the amount of deliberate product placement in most of the DVD's you own. It's in movies and TV (not just commercials but in the TV episode itself). On products you buy, they have the company logo on it, which is in itself a form of advertisement. You'll often find dealership advertisements on your car when you leave with it in the form of license plate frames or whatnot. I've even seen some dealerships affix a permanent logo on the back. You can't very well walk down the street and not be fed some form of advertising, unless you live in the middle of nowhere with corn crops all around you.
I don't agree with having ads in games, I don't like having ads in games. But I'm not going to boycott a game because it has in game advertisements on the faux principle that they should only make money from one source or the other because I don't want to be subjected to ads. I will not buy a game if I feel that the in game ads are excessively in-your-face or somehow interferes with the way I play the game. If it's like anything else around me where it's there, but I don't notice it unless I actually focus on it, then so be it. The companies posting up the ads won't make any money off of me if I don't even look at them.
The way the ads are placed in ETQW, they are sort of out of the way and are on places that you don't tend to be looking at anyway. It's been said that they will be in the same style as the GDF ads in the betas, having that faded and weathered look, so there won't be and bright red banners to catch your eye. If anything, I think the boys at SD did a great job of ripping off the advertising companies.
If you don't want to buy this game for the sole reason that you want to stand up for your principles, well, I can respect that. It's just that I feel that such principles against advertisements to be a little skewed considering the other products and media that you use and pay money for that also has ads.
