Ok, well, I just ordered one. I cant pass up on a price like that, and my GPU was broke, so... Woo? I guess.

I'm not as "up" with computer tech these days, but still, this will keep me going for another month.

according to the benchmarks i've seen, 8800GTS in SLI outperfoms the 8800GTX single card, though not by much, and that's at 1600x1200 or less. the single GTX is slightly cheaper though...

Right. NOT BY MUCH.

Which means? Its fucking pointless.

SLI is a bit of an odd spot, you need to spend twice as much, and most games cant even be bothered to support it.

When you get 100FPS+ average in UT3 on a single card... Whats the point of SLI? I mean yeah its good, but its just bragging rights, you dont NEED it...

Heres where I bought it from:

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=691916

Here is the Toms Hardware guide, including benchmarks of a few games (UT3 and Crysis too):

http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/10/29/ ... index.html

Quote:

"Regarding the clock, Nvidia has pushed the G92's stream processors to no less than 1.5 GHz. At the end of the day, the GeForce 8800GT has a computational power 46% higher than that of the 8800GTS and merely 3% lower than the 8800GTX! The only downside is memory bandwidth decreasing by 10% (still in comparison to the 8800GTS). Memory capacity is now 512 MB, but a 256 MB version will appear in the coming weeks."

It sounds like you're really trying to convince yourself that you made the correct decision. You have done well; all of the 8800 series cards are good. Memory makes a difference and the more you have the better your games will look. If you can get 8800 card for that kind of money then you have made the right choice. gg

If I had money to burn and I didn't care, I would easily go for the GTX. Thing is, the price difference between the GT and the GTX and the spec difference just isn't enough for me. Maybe if the GTX was twice the speed, then twice the cost would be ok, but its not, at all really.

For the price, you cant go wrong with this puppy. I know of 4 other people who already bought one today just because of how good a deal it is.

yeah the GT looks like the card to go for. my twin 7600s handle all the HL2 games, including Ep2, with internal settings maxed and 8 x aniso, but they stagger under the weight of the crysis demo and even the UT3 demo has some moments that, while not unplayable, are perceptibly soupy

though, on reflection, that might be because demos moronically don't support SLI while the full game does...

bottom line is, will a single 8800GT outperform 2 x 7600GS yes or no. can't find any 3Dmark scores for the 8800GT...

From what I'm told, yeah, it should out perform two 7600GS's in sli.

EDIT: BTW, that Toms Hardware link has some 3D mark scores i think.

there are no 3Dmark scores that i can see, just game benches

nonetheless, the GT hits 35fps @ 1600x1200 in HQ in crysis, whereas my current setup feels roughly like 20fps @ 1024x768 in MQ

on the other hand i could just wait a few months for the GT price to come down to around £120 and get 2 :!:

Would it be worthwhile to buy another 8800gts 640 if that happens?

I keep reading Seremtan's disappointing results with his SLI setup (anyone else here have a SLI setup?) so I'm starting to doubt if the benefits outweigh the cost.

Nope. Pointless.

Its exactly why i sold my SLI motherboard, and never looked back.

Ok, got it, installed it, and even with a shitty setup in dire need of a format (in a bit), its not even trying. I managed to test 20 lights in Doom 3 on the same spot and had barely a hit on performance. Quake 4 runs like a dream, ET:QW like butter etc... In fact the only thing I think will test it, is the Crysis demo, but I'll get that once I format.
