It's a pretty good action flick, although I did feel it tried a bit too hard. Out of the group of people who I watched it with I was the only one who had anything negative to say - everyone else loved it.

it is pretty fucking awful. it's a car chase movie, but everyone talks way too much and there's none of the driver meditation that's traditionally in that sort of film. one of the naffest bits is tarantino's cameo, he has this annoying comfortableness thing going on where being tall, fat, freakish and ugly is it's own ethnicity.

Ah... shame. I'll probably still see it eventually though.

Tarantino should stop trying to be an actor, he's really quite bad at it. I hated his bit in Planet Terror too.

The Punisher - 4/10
I'm going through a bit of a Punisher phase at the moment, reading the Garth Ennis "MAX" trade paperbacks while waiting for the next "Walking Dead" trade, so I thought I'd give the Thomas Jane adaptation a shot, see if it managed to give a decent spin to the Punisher story.

It didn't.

Thomas Jane isn't big enough, old enough or angry enough to portray Frank Castle effectively. He just doesn't suit the role.

The "Origin" as displayed in the movie is completely wrong.
The violence is watered down, and Castle's ruthlessness is suspicious by its absence.

In closing, it's a shit version that doesn't even scrape the dark themes portrayed in the comics.

that's probably the best way to do it. i've been buying the books but d/l'ing the comics.

won't give anything away but after a patch of emmerdale, the last couple of issues have been cliffhanger stressfests.

Yeah, Walking Dead's kinda responsible for rekindling my interest in comics.
I used to buy shitloads but stopped in the mid-nineties.
Helps that I've got a couple of workmates who are into comics too, so we regularly trade books.

But this is the movie thread, so I'll just add that The Walking Dead is responsible for me now owning every Romero "Dead" movie.
Dawn of the Dead is easily the best of the lot and has aged pretty damn well.
I just wish modern movie/game makers would follow Romero's lead and realise that slow zombies are the best zombies.

Matt my story is exactly like yours. Fell out of comics in the mid nineties, saw a write-up on Walking Dead, bought the first trade, now I spend upwards of $70 on comics every week.
The only book I read that comes close to TWD is Y The Last Man, if you don't read that go out right now and buy every trade. It's almost done it's entire run.

It's also been optioned as a movie.

Oh, and I think slow zombies only work if you have interesting characters (as that's where the drama comes from). I definitely prefer the slowies (roamers) but I do see the occasional fast zombie as being effective (ie: in the Dawn of the Dead remake).

I think it helps that comics have "grown up" somewhat.
Themes tend to be a lot more mature these days, and the writing is an order of magnitude better, often dealing with complex and surreal material with style.
I've still got to hassle a workmate for the rest of the Preacher trades.
That one really took me by surprise.

It's pretty much as 4days said. It's almost as if it's a parody of QT's good movies, exaggerating the things which are unique about his movies (the dialogue and schlocky gore) to a comical level. I'd say 85% of the movie was plain dialogue scenes where he tries to give the female leads character- but he tried my patience and then lost me when he fucked around for probably 45 minutes of annoying dialogue at the beginning followed up by killing every character he wasted time building up (and I use the term loosely), as if to say "fuck you" to the viewer. Not to mention that the last half of the movie was just fucking terrible and I hated the characters.

as for "The Host", it could have been the dubbing (which was insanely bad, I can't believe any of the people got paid for their voice work) but it was all around confusing and schizophrenic, ruining moments of comedy with some genuinely sad scenes and vice versa. It basically had no point and was completely unsatisfying in almost any sense one would watch a movie for.

Once Upon A Time In China 2 - 2/5

It started out fairly well. There was an interesting plot and likable characters. Then it failed miserably. The "fight" against the White Lotus sect at the end was some of the worst cinematography I've ever seen. It was like the sort of videos my friends and I would make when we were 8.
As it was an Asian martial arts movie, I'd forgive it because of the awesome fight moves, but there were none. They all were hokey.
