LAN Question for Vista/xp computers at home

Post by spacedoggy »

Hello - Thanks for reading this!

I have a Vista and XP computer as well as some Macs connected by Airport Extreme except the pcs which are connected by cable into the back of airport.
I wanted to play Quake 3 Arena via LAN and ive read all the posts re set up, but still cant get it to work.

If I try to set a new server on the faster compter, this is what I get:

Well it basically looks like you're somehow starting a dedicated server from within the game. Dedicated server is not a game client, it's just a server, the "small blue screen" that you're seeing.

You either want to make a listen server (which is a game client other people can connect to, then the server and other people play) OR a dedicated server, which is JUST a server for others to connect to.

Would help if you explain what you're doing to get this result, then I can tell you where you're going wrong.

Thanks for your help "creep" :)

Yep, I just want to hook up the 2 pcs so I can play in one room, and my mate in the other room. Not via the net.

So on the Vista machine, I start Q3A, then select multiplayer, then server "local" then create, then select a map, then LAN. The game then disappears and the blue box with the writing appears.

I then go into the other room, open Q#A on XP, choose Multiplayer, but cant see any local servers listed.

Sorry to be a dumass :smirk:

Where you're setting:

Dedicated: LAN

Change that to:

Dedicated: No

You should be set. I also noticed you appear to be using q3 version 1.30. You will need to be using the same version on both computers.

Thanks - That get the game launched on the Vista machine, but when I start the XP I still cant find any server / game to join to - and yep - running the same Q3A on both machines.

no idea beyond that. works fine for me.

Ensure that on the server browser screen you have

Servers: Local
Game Type: All
Show Full: on
Show empty: on

oh... you may need to turn off windows firewall on the "server" computer. lol.

Try starting the server from the XP machine then connecting with the Vista machine.

I would guess your firewall products are preventing things working smoothly.

Also ensure both copies of the game are on the same version number (bring down the console, look in right-hand corner)

I disabled both firewalls on the vista and xp but still nothing. This is what I do.....

Both machines have Q3 1.30

On the Vista Machine:
Double Click Q3A Icon
Select Multiplayer
Select Servers Local - Game Type Free for all - Sort by Ping Time - Show Full - On - Show Empty - On
Select - Create
Select Map Q3DM1
Select Next
Select Frag Limit 20 - Time Limit 0 - Pure Server On - Dedicated LAN - Hostname noname
Select Fight

The Game then disappears, and a small blue (dos?) box appears with lots of writing...

Then as that box remains on the screen, I again double click on the Q3A Icon and launch a second time...

I select Multiplayer... AND I SEE THE SERVER :) So I join the game..... HOWEVER

I then go to the other room (remember both machines are connected via airport extreme) but have their firewalls disabled (eeeep!)

On the XP, I double click Q3A Icon

Select Multiplayer.... and nothing... no servers listed :(

Ok.... so what am I doing wrong guys?
