Practicing against bots will make you good... at killing bots. They are unlike players in every way, and if you will be playing "live" online, not on LAN, then that's how you need to be practicing.

i dont mean on things like item timing and actual strategy, i mean on aiming and weapon skill. Bots will help with that, to some extent.

They won't. And practicing without a ping won't help you either.

bots won't help much beyond a certain point. You'll need live humans to generate difficult movement patterns to challenge you.

I recommend rocket arena, though almost everyone playing these days is at a fairly advanced level so it's gonna be deep end for you.

eo_tourney1

-good for railgun..I've had some good online matches on it also...it's just a flat square space map. All about aiming.

All of this bot/human argument on who's more difficult...load up 3 bots on skill 5 on this map in an instagib mod...there's no human that'll kick your ass like that. Get the railor mod here

the latest two posts have actually been helpful. Cheers, Q3 community :)

Vile is my homeboy :D

EDIT: The RA community in Aus is pretty noob, but theyre all idiots who complain when they lose. Its no fun that way. Duelling people is out of the question in Aus, seeing as everybody is on a "can beat you with just mg" level against me, and believe me, of all the people i know that are willing to play Quake, bots are the more fun alternative. Any help they can give me for getting good enough to hold my own against some of the duellists here is well accepted.

EDIT2: Ive been using Corkscrew as an InstaGib mod. It does the trick, but if anybody can suggest anything else, ill give it a shot. I havent tried Railor yet, ill hit it up in a sec.

spiterbot mod for duels is the way to go then :) plays excellent on ztn. ofc it cant be changed by actual online play, but it most certainly helps if you're a bit low on skill in the tactics and moving-object aim apartment.

Corkscrew is a fun mod...that's one of the first favorite mods back in the beginning. These days I just use it for space maps that the bots always fall of to keep them from losing fragpoints. Perfect for maps like:skytown2
Railor was a mod that the maker was trying to make bots that seemed like real instagib players...I mean, it's not perfect, but he did a pretty damn good job. They have redone chatlines also. With the fall into the void, everyone is given a teleporter everytime that they make a frag(tag). So if the bots fall, they automatically use their teleporter if they have one, with keeps them from losing fragpoints. It's not as good as Corkscrew in that aspect, but good nevertheless.
Another instagib(single weapon) mod that is good is Xtreme Arena. You can pick a weapon(plus have alternate fire) or Lumbo mod(gauntlet), or excessive. In instagib the rg refire is a little faster, and I think these are the most dangerous railing bots of all mods. At some points you get keep on getting spawn/frag-raped(or whatever that's called I can't remember).

Load up CPMA mod to practice with bots...CPMA bots are harder then normal...
There are some new bots as well, with slightly better strategic play and some "personal" properties. They can only be used at skill 6 and above (CPMA AI).

Apheleon
* faster than all other bots
* has improved RL
* uses the "alternate" weapon choices

arQon
* only slightly faster than normal bots
* has godlike RL
* uses RL a LOT

rat (the LPB version)
* faster than normal bots
* has godlike RL
* uses RL a LOT

Notice that the CPMA bots really start to shine from level 85 and up, since that is the level their special skills start to kick in.

Cpma's bots are definitely the best in many ways, but when it comes to instagib their no better than any other mods really... Considering I play Cpma 98% of the time out of my 70-some mods in my Q3A folder...hehe. They have many faults also though. The most annoying one being that they get stuck on RL-jump spots(aiming their RL at the floor) on maps that have them...like cpm5 for example..I wish arQon would fix that, but he probably won't. The 6-100 ones like to drowned, fall into lava pits, and other map hazard area's..their suicidal bots. Their good on tight tourney maps like cpm3(a)...that's about it. Their still the funnest though..I probably would have never become the Q3A fiend that I have become without Cpma. There still is alot of other mods though. Headhunters 3, Generations, Overpower, PnPmode, Hunt, etc.. Battlebots is pretty fun also, if you like grappling bots...they aren't exactly furious, but still some fun.

CPMA was where i started playing Quake 3. The bots are great, i whip em out all the time for warm ups. 80.rat is a favourite of mine, i never really got into Aph, i probably should. The instagib mod itself is pretty cool, simple, elegant, etc.. Viles suggested maps and mods have worked out spectacularly, just the thing :)

Of course, im still open to any more suggestions, so if anybody else has anything else theyd like to add, please do :)

Thanks Vile, still my homeboy :P
