had this problem on another machine and can't remember how i fixed it.
basically, the taskbar (and the items on it) intermittently stop responding to LMB or RMB clicks. can only get it working again by alt-tabbing to a running program and it's starting to get irritating.
problem started a few days ago - haven't installed any new software for weeks so not too sure where to start looking for the culprit, anyone else seen the same/similar problem and solved by an easier means than reinstalling?

i know that ive had these hickup's but usually its caused by the system backing up a little bit due to uptime..
usually restarting explorer flused it out, but if this is happening when you are running on a fresh boot, it must be something else..
go to your processes tab and post the processes that are running.
See if that helps.

edited original post, actually need to alt-tab to get it working again. hitting start does nowt - although that bit of the taskbar does respond to the mouse, which (like you've said) makes me wonder if it's something other than explorer just hanging.
murphy's law being what it is, looking at system info or the task manager stops the problem - so i can't tell exactly what's happening when the taskbar freezes up.
going to leave it running a few bog-standard maintenance things (windows update, anti-virus, etc) and nip out for a swift half and see if that fixes it.

set it to defrag all the disks tonight once the anti-virus has finished.
killed hotsync, d-tools and avg and the damn thing did it again 5 minutes later - so fairly sure 3rd party stuff's ruled out.
ah well, cheers for the suggestions. think i'll just start using geoshell again if it doesn't sort itself out tomorrow.
